You don't know what the ups and down of 48.2 are do you?

I already answered you above, but I'll try again.

I was in House 47 this year, which is a mirror image of 48. The rooms are decent-sized, bigger than Goldsmith, with lots of storage space & a big desk. You'll have your own (small) ensuite bathroom with toilet, sink & shower. There's no common sitting area, just a small kitchen which has a hob, microwave, fridge & kettle. Overall, while they're not as nice as, say, the GMB, they're in a quiet part of campus, the rooms are decent and perfectly serviceable for your average student.

HOWEVER...if your room faces towards the Beckett, woe betide you, because you will be awoken on weekday mornings by the gleeful (and sometimes just plain tantrum-y) shrieks of the children in the creche, playing right outside your window. On the plus side, you will never again take a laissez-faire approach towards contraception, and may develop new and interestingly-militant views on the mandatory gagging of children.
My bedroom for next year is literally right above this crèche. Just how early does this screaming start? I'm hoping to simply not be around for the majority of it, and to relish in sweet silence in the night time. I was in Front Square this year and within glorious earshot of buskers/drunken singing from Grafton Street every night, so I feel like children will be a step up...

Thanks a million for the help
Does anyone know if 48.2.02 faces over the creche?
    Is the heating a problem?
How do you cook nearly everything without an oven?

Sorry for all the questions. I know I should consider myself lucky for getting campus but i dont want to pay such a high price for something thats lacking

Everyone I've spoken to has got a place on campus, including several people from Dublin. I find it hard to understand how I didn't get a place. I'm from well outside Dublin, will be a 4th year and applied with someone. Does anyone know if they use particular methods to select people apart from complete randomness and the application form? Perhaps they pick people based on how early you applied? I applied very late so I was just thinking that perhaps that was an issue.

Well I don't think how early you apply is a factor. In my case I applied two/three weeks before the deadline and spent about a week carefully crafting my application (It was a lovely read in the end) but it did f*** all cos i got offered Goldsmith. I'm a 4th year (will be), society captain, member of three sports clubs etc and also applied with another 4th yr roommate.

I gave my application to my girlfriend to work off and she wrote hers up, applied the day before and she got front square. So who knows how they decide.

Can anyone confirm this? Does the kitchen really have no oven????

Some of the places in Pearse Street (I think it's all/just the new ones) have a microwave-oven thing. It's like a big microwave with a heating element, from what I have seen. Functionally both microwave and oven.

Also I'm not sure if 48 is over the creche, but room 2 might face onto Pearse Street itself, if it's like house 50.

Cheers. It was the oven I was worried about. You'd struggle to cook anything with out one really.

I'm in house 49. Any one know if that's over the creche? :)

Nope, safely away from the creche...although you might be facing out onto Pearse Street, in which case you'd best prepare for a thin film of pollution forming over everything you own.

Edit: actually, some rooms in 49 are *right* over the creche...

    Do you know about 48.02.02?

I can't remember the arrangement of the room numbers, so no, sorry, but I *think* you might be facing the Health Centre side.

In fairness, the kids are not that bad. And all houses in Pearse Street are affected by the creche to some extent, as when they're being dropped off & picked up they have to walk through the archways linking Houses 47/48 or 51/52, depending on the direction they're coming from, so plenty of chattering/laughing/screaming kids for all.

Far more annoying, I found, was the people who worked in the Health Centre letting exterior doors SLAM SHUT every time they went in or out, even really early in the morning (from about 7am sometimes)

Has anyone got notification of the second round offers for campus yet? It is taking ridiculously long to let the people on the waiting list know if they have got a place in the second round or not. How long can it possibly take to allocate rooms?

Anyone have any idea of when they will let us know?

I was there last year, hated it, the rooms themselves are a decent size, the bathrooms and kitchens are quite small. Rooms 1-4 are facing the tennis courts. They're not the most social of places to live, i regularly went weeks without seeing flatmates..... Also, house 30 is the dining hall side of the GMB

A friend of mine has heard something to the effect of RA positions (like looking after younger people staying in accommodation in exchange for a subsidised room) being available. Anyone know if there's any truth in that? And if so, what kind of subsidies are on offer?

Sounds like the Assistant Registrars of Chambers to me. I don't know what their role actually entails, though.

That or the assistant wardens in Trinity Hall.

Got offered Goldsmith Hall today. Anyone know anything about room 69.3? Does it face into the courtyard or onto Pearse St.? Is it beside the train station?

I've heard very mixed reviews about Goldsmith but despite the expense (a whooping €153a week! That's nearly what I paid per MONTH as an Erasmus student in a hall of residences in Germany, with an en-suite daire I add) I'll go with it for the sake of the sheer convenience of being on campus (kinda!). I've heard it can actually be quite good craic in Goldsmith. But I've also heard about the lack of en-suites, the weird pollution on the windows from Pearse St., the noise from the trains, etc.

Anyone got anything more to add?

From what I remember, the rooms in House 69 will either face onto Pearse Street or the courtyard. Were you offered 69.3.x? In that case you'll probably be up a floor, so if the room faces the courtyard it's actually fine, courtyard rooms only suck if you're on the ground floor. That house is nowhere near the railway bridge, so you shouldn't get noise from the trains.

En-suites can be hit & miss, but if you don't get one you'll only be sharing a bathroom with one other person.

Goldsmith is all right, but it does have a bit of an institutional feel to it, unlike some of the rooms on campus proper which have a bit more character. If you are a science-end person it's undoubtedly really handy, and it's convenient for the gym.

Thanks for the info. I got 69.3.03. Do you know up how many flights of stairs that is? Is there a lift in Goldsmith? I still haven't accepted as I'm not sure I want to put up with the restrictions of campus (I know there are huge benefits too!) along with the ridiculous price to live in Goldsmith. Although, I may accept it because it would be very convenient to be close to the library and lectures for my final year. I'm also currently away and won't be back in Ireland until mid-August so I wouldn't fancy searching for an apartment then.

I know you're only allowed one guest per night who has to be signed-in before 12 but can you get away with entering college through the gate beside the Sports Centre with people who aren't signed in? Or if you get someone else on campus to sign another person in for you, does the person who signed them in have to enter college with them after midnight or can they come in without them?

I *think* you'll be up one flight of stairs, as in Goldsmith apartments 1 & 2 are on the ground floor, 3 & 4 are one up etc., though I don't really remember- anyone want to help me out here? There are lifts in Goldsmith as far as I know.

As for signing people in, there is a security booth in the courtyard of Goldsmith, and security can ask you to show that you've signed in the person you're bringing back, just like at Front Gate. If someone else has signed a person in for you, the resident has to be there when that person arrives. I lost count of the number of times I had to troop down to Front Gate at 2am to collect a friend who had gone out, but who was staying in my room that night.

I'm still being told by the Accommodation Office that they have nothing for me. I'm a returning Erasmus student going into final year, and my parents have said they won't help me pay for any accommodation but on-campus!

Should I just keep trying up until Freshers Week and beyond? Does anyone know the likelihood of me getting anything at this stage? Will going in in person help or hinder me?

    Thanks yall

Go in in person, about once every ten days or so. Sob stories help. Don't give up by Freshers' Week either. This has worked in the past.

Also, why would your parents only pay your rent if you live on-campus? It's more expensive than any equivalent accommodation elsewhere in Dublin.

Am I right in saying that if you are going into 1st year you can only apply for Accommodation once you have been given your placement on the course?

Does anyone also know if you can pay the rent or registration fee in stages or anything or is everything up front? money problems and I don't think i can get a grant because I'm from Scotland and I would also be 17 so I cannot obtain a loan from a bank..

    Thanks in advance

I can't go in in person until mid-September, as I'm currently abroad. Should I keep emailing or wait until I can in person?

Yes, I know. Personally I would love to live in Trinity at least once, but if it comes to them refusing me, I would live elsewhere also. However, my parents are quite irrational and will refuse to pay for anywhere except for Trinity. I think it comes down to the security Trinity offers, and also them just being irrational about it.

Don't really think that counts as a 'sob story' to be honest, but I don't know if I'd be comfortable with doing that. What would it entail saying? (ie what has worked in the past?)

    Thanks for your help btw!

Also, not sure if anyone is using this forum during summertime, but have any of you that are not taking your residences not formally refused it yet? I'm pinning my hopes on cancellations and refusals at this stage!

Keep at them, miracles can happen.
Going in in person will help, but ring the accommodation office, and ask to speak to someone, and explain your predicament. Everyone is helpful when you're offering 6000 euro!

They've said "I understand that the waiting list is very long. Again, my advice would be not to wait and hope for a room on Campus, as I do feel your chances would be very slim. I would therefore advise that if your parents are willing to pay for College accommodation, you would consider Trinity Hall now, before there are no longer any places available there either."

Trinity Hall like. I'm going to be in final year!

    And?
Postgrads live in halls. It's not that far away either.
