Would appreciate some insights on the above please.
the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V can be seen here http://www.vodafone.ie/businessbroadband/mobile/devices/galaxytab101v/ and
    the iPad2 here http://store.apple.com/ie/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad/select?mco=MjE2MjYyNzA
The Galaxy is 579 inc vat to buy outright
One issue seems to be that at least with the iPad the charger connection doubles up as a usb connecting to allow rapido transfer of pics and music.
The Galaxy seems to be all wifi

The iPad wont charge off most PC's, not sure about the Galaxy Tab, but both can be connected via USB to transfer stuff across. The Galaxy Tab will just mount the same as any USB drive and you can drag and drop music and movies across and they will just appear in your media list and play, nothing can be transferred to the iPad without using iTunes. The iPad will also only sync with one PC at a time whereas with the Galaxy Tab you could add stuff from your laptop, then your desktop, then your mates computer without any annoyances.

    Thanks for reply.

What I meant by the use of the charging connection on the iPad is that if u buy an extra gizmo for 30 euro u can connect the iPad to a PC to transfer stuff. I acknowledge the iTunes issue.

The tab has no such facility

<The basic shape and size isn't all that's borrowed from the iPad, however; like Apple, Samsung opts for a sealed device with no replaceable battery, no microSD card slot and no HDMI or micro-USB ports. In fact, there are only three ports on the 10.1v: A headphone socket, a slot for a SIM card and a 30-pin charging port. >

    However from here:

    <ConnectivityBluetooth® technology v 2.1 + EDR
    USB 2.0
    WiFi 802.11 (a/b/g/n) >
So unless they are making a special one for the Ozzies...

The lady in Vodafone in Swords today was adamant that there was no usb connection.

The Galaxy Tab uses a proprietary charging/usb cable, same as the iPad does, both connect as USB to your computer. See item in top middle of unboxing below, and again blown up in 2nd pic below.

    Charger

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 uses a proprietary USB port to charge and sync the device. As with any mobile device, it is a good idea to have a spare charger available in any place you regularly spend time, like you work or school. This will allow you to charge your device when needed without always remembering to carry an extra accessory around.

    Thanks for that, much appreciated.

Do you think it has a mic?
No mention in the specs but says it supports Talk Video chat

    Hi Carlow52,

Yes it definitely had a mic. They almost go without saying these days as the video camera among all the google talk integration features require it.

the tab 10.1V is already obselete as samsung are not even making them anymore! they now just make the 10.1 which is 2mm thinner

I don't understand why Samsung couldn't have just used a standard micro USB/HDMI. Why the proprietary connection? Pain in the arse.

Hasn't been released yet so that's unfair to say. Samsung are launching it as their premier tablet and the specs and software are all the latest and most up to date available. Looks good to me!:D

If it doesn't have a usb port it can fcuk right off. Not acceptable!

It does. its almost identical to the apple usb/charging cable style that they use. Its actually a shameless rip off but it does actually have a usb port!

    Holy mother of god -.-

That is the problem! It's NOT a usb port on the tablet end. It's USB on the other end!!! Which is no good at all, both ends need standard connections.

With my cheapo archos tablet I can just plug a bog standard usb keyboard into it. You cannot do this with galaxy or ipad. Yes, my archos uses a proprietary CHARGER, but it still has a normal USB port. It actually has a full-sized usb port AND a micro-usb port.

I getcha. My bad man I wasn't following you properly sorry! Does it read usb sticks out of interest? Sounds like a handy piece of kit!

No worries mate. Yes it does "just work" with usb stick as well. I cannot believe these top of the range expensive tablets lack this feature :(

It really is a scam tbh, they want to use proprietary connectors so they can make money by selling you "special" accessories. Which is total rubbish of course, you should be able to have all your gear interoperate easily.

It's all about what you'll get away with. They'll stay drip releasing features that should be well incorporated into tablets and phones as long as they stay getting away with it! The iPhone 4 drove me mad when they released it and drove me to android! Haven't looked back since! Have you tried flashing a ROM on your tablet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

No, but there is an "uruk droid" custom rom for the archos. Not tried it, don't feel the need really.

Having full flash on tablet is pretty cool, I leave it propped up beside my desk playing aljazeera or rte.
