    Hi everyone,
Just wondering has anyone ever purchased a reconditioned turbo for their car? As I said on another thread it is very likely that my turbo is gone, getting my mechanic to look at my A4 this evening, If it is gone I wanted to be prepared for making the decision as to whether I should buy a new one or a reconditioned one, I just want to hear others opinions or experiences, the reconditioned turbos come with a year warranty, just like the brand new ones, the difference in price is immense- around 900 euro! any advice is more than welcome :-)

Get a recon, sell and cut your losses.
    Buy a toyota......

    Only kidding.

Nothing wrong with a reconditioned Turbo. Is the mileage high? Is it a diesel?

89k is small mileage for the turbo to go. What year is the car? You might want to make sure that there isn't another underlying problem that could cause the turbo issue - like oil starvation. I know the 2.0 had a weak oil pump but not the 1.9.
Did this happen suddenly or was it whistling for a while?
Your mechanic is the best man to speak to.

Must be a day for it. I was on the motorway today en-route to pick up a prospective new car only for the turbo to let go on my current bmw 320d! My mechanic is sourcing a new unit from some crowd in Cavan..850e + vat.:(

In fairness the car has 168k miles on it now so the turbo was probably well due reconditioning.

Bummer, just out of interest was the breather filter changed on your car regularly along with recommended oil services ?

I have a friend who is a bit of a turbo specialist. he has told me so many stories of people fitting new turbos and blowing the new ones because of inadequate cleaning of pipes etc, and non changing of oil when fitting new turbo.

he sells remanufactured turbos with a warranty. the one for the A4 is 500 euro plus vat.

for the 320 d BMW the situation is not so simple as there is more than one make of turbo fitted, ball park figure of 650 euro plus vat.

PM me if you have not purchased yet

It happened pretty suddenly and I didnt hear a whistling sound at all, have left my car to my mechanic so Im hoping he'll find out why it went or if there is any other underlying problem, I hope there isnt!!

Yep ,changed every second service (12k miles) with oil changes, Castrol Edge, every 6k miles. It was only serviced on Friday last.:(
Thanks for the offer, rugbyman, but mechanic has ordered already as I need the car on the road asap. I was looking forward to changing the car too...still..168k on the original turbo isn't bad really.

To be fair, 168k should be half of the life expectancy of any engine component - especially if it was looked after correctly.

That's a balls, I'd have thought the turbo would be minty fresh after being looked after like that, perhaps she wasn't as well treated in her earlier days, a couple of overdue oil changes can do damage. Still the 320s are know for it.

I'm not a fan of long oil changes on modern diesels and mine was an ex fleet car with oil changes every 15k or so up to 115k when I bought it.
@cadaliac: While I agree that most engine components should be good for 300k+(I'd a work van that I put up 350k miles in 4 years and was still running perfectly), turbo's aren't likely to last that long without an overhaul.
