Hey my car was broken into on Monday evening while I was walkin the dog in East Meath, My wallet was in the glovebox and the F*ckers got it !! there was nothing on display , they did over €600 of damage to the car but atleast youd think the insurance would cover it?? nah not a chance Quinn Direct wormed their way out of it yet again because they didnt try steal the car and said the damage was just malicious! ANYYWAY - in my wallet was all my gun licenses and even though Ive reported this to the gards and done the whole statement and fingerprint thing , they dont seem too bothered about the fact that some scumbag is walkin round with the possibility of buying shotgun ammunition and various different high powered rifle ammunition calibres..

Am I the only one that thinks there should be picture i.d on these new licenses?? I have to live with some **** head walkin round , maybe buyin a few slabs of shotgun shells and selling them to god knows who and possibly being responsible for murders , after all the sawn-off shotgun is probably one of the most easily available guns out there.. what should I do ?? I cant believe the Gards are so un-interested in the fact these licenses have fallen into the hands of scumbags , yet when someone like me who has been cleared to own firearms numerous times I still undergo awful hassle when trying to buy a new gun.. Lads Im so sick of this , sorry had to vent

A picture would be ten times better than our feckin address anyway. Scenario 1: Firearm License gets stolen, picture on front....they can't buy ammo....
Scenario 2: (current) Firearm License is stolen, they can buy ammo, and they know where you live/keep your firearms and ammo...

Bit of a open and shut case for pictures to replace addresses really isn't it?

But its common sense , you dont put the address , name and type of firearm in the house on it... like we may aswell tell them where we keep the spare key outside too !! i thought the whole point of giving the photo with this new licensing thing was so it would be put on the license card itself , not in some folder in a file in the garda station, what ****in good is that ?? cos if my guns go missing because of this I'M the one gonna be in trouble and will never be allowed own a gun again ! Im really really annoyed over this

    Rabbit,

    1. That is BS by Quinn and do not put up with it. The automatic response of most insurers - particularly bailed-out gamblers like Quinn - is to deny liability, it sometimes works. Put in the boot! Who is to contradict you if you say 'they tried to steal the car and did not succeed.' Go talk to a solicitor and instruct him/her on a no foal/no fee basis. Under your policy you probably have to carry the first 150, but there is €500 more....
    2. Ask AGS to do a few drive-bys on your house, saying that you are concerned about security.

It's off topic here, but I fail to understand why anyone would insure with a firm that has a reputation like Quinns!

I was thinking this , the only reason i stuck with them is because I have 3 years no claims bonus and Id have to pay the first €300 , I think i will go to my solicitor Thanks for that idea ;)

    I can't resist it.
Isn't it usually a vet you talk to on that basis?
    :p

im with quinn. For the simple reason, no claims, no points, full licence and they are nearly a grand cheaper than the other main companys. But yea thats bull ****. At least i know if my car is ever broken into, to break the steering lock, pull out a few wires and bait a flathead into the ignition. At least it looks good.

I will resist :P all temptation to respond inappropriately about being screwed in the law ;) Most lawyers outside of the big firms will do no foal/no fee work, the term is common parlance.
BUT as Rabbit has a 300 excess, the hassle for 300 is hardly worth it and it would be worthwhile to have a go on his own first.
Even thinking about Quinn <snip> puts me in bad humour, :(.

That, sadly, is why those gougers have had to be rescued by the Irish taxpayer and why that firm is in the manure business.

I will not have anything to do with Quinn. If they were the cheapest by a grand I would still avoid them.
They are just not worth dealing with IMO.

ah well you might be lucky that they only took the wallet for what cash/credit cards that you had and then discard the wallet.then have a good samaritan to hand it in to the local garurd station..heres hoping anyway

Sorry about your trouble man hope all is found. i think the new licences should have a picture but also a barcode to scan at the gun shop for ammo that if your card was stolen it would reject the sale thus protecting the shop owner the person who owned the card and not letting ammo fall into the wrong hands. I was with Quinn myself before for the simple reason its cheap and cheerful but a friend fo mine working in the insurance area told me that they were a shower of b***ds when it came to claiming and this was before they ever went down the swany. hope all works out for you.

My son's '01 Fiesta broke down on the Arklow by-pass , which was insured by AXA, on a Friday. As it was the weekend & he didn't have breakdown cover he parked it & continued his journey, returning to the car Sunday evening.

Car was gone....gardaí had towed it in, even though it was on hard shoulder.

Went to GardaI....reason it was towed in was it was vandalised & vunerable. €390 tow in fee & €60 per day storage.

Car was broken into...every window & sunroof smashed.....door locks & paintwork damaged...radio stolen....dash damaged & airbacks set off trying to rob radio.......car was worth approx. €1,200.......ended up a write off.....damage plus towing fee was more than the car was worth.

Contacted AXA...same story...not a car theft attempt as ignition okay so not covered...not covered for vandalism. He had 3rd party, fire & theft cover.

He just collected the insurance disc and walked away...writing off the car!!!!!!!!

If you don't have comprehensive cover you're in tough luck in such a scenario.
