Backing tracks/ drum samples/strings in Live situation

    Hi guys long time reader

Looking for advice on something.I have a bit of knowedge with engineering but not loads though.

Been playing with a band for the last year and we want to have backing tracks of say string sections, drum loops, percussive stuff etc..
The drummer is playing to a click for the past year so he should'nt have any problem playing along.

Right so we get tracks back from the studio sit down with the mixed tracks, we now want to add all this string stuff and percussion, am I correct in saying what I'd need is a midi keyboard, reason and pro tools for recording live samples like just a snare or shakers?

When playing this stuff back in a live situation what would i need to play it back in drummers in ears, click in left, tracks/samples in right and tracks without click going to FOH what would be the easiest and cheapest option.

If anyone has any links to articles on this topic or advice that'd be great

    Thanks for reading

    we do something similar

laptop, ableton and soundcard (with a few outs) will do everyting you want - from recording the live stuff you want to playing the backing tracks for FOH to sending click to drummer

dont necessarily need a midi keyboard but it can make life way easier (can also use it from triggering the tracks in live situation)

for the drummer - reckon best bet is to ask him ! and try out a few combinations (again ableton is very easy when it comes to routing), he may well have a better time without the backing tracks in his ears preferring to jam off the bass and guitars

versions of Live - live intro can only do 2 stereo audio inputs and 2 stereo audio outs, might be enough for you, also limits on the amount of external effects / instruments you can use in one project - see here http://www.ableton.com/live-le-feature-comparison . imo intro is seriously restricted and will slow down your work flow as you try and work around the restrictions

mbox - wouldnt be my first choice, aimed primarily at protools. A mate had one and he wasnt able to monitor a different track B while track A was playing (like a dj might do while - cueing) which is very useful in band sit. I dont have any direct experience of the mbox

drum module - imo this is over complicating things and adding extra expense. You can use drum samples - loads available around the place for free and tons to buy. Just arrange the samples straight into a audio track in ableton. Lots of info over on the dmp forum ... Neuro (mod) is doing some good vids at the moment in ableton and has a daycent sample pack avail for dl http://spiralking.com/samples/ . r you can just chop samples from your fav records. Using samples will be much quicker and give you loads more choice and flexibility. Some of the other lads have done some very good tutorials about how to start arranging drums (these were way back when so you'll have to dig - think it was sean nash using logic but the same principles apply)

novation nio will prob do all you want. send tracks to FOH, click to drummer and leave you will another stereo out for what ever you want - and with the direct monitoring its also possible to headphone monitor the various outs. That interface also ships with a version of ableton live (it says abe LE6 on thomann but I very much doubt thats the case as its obsolete - prob worth banging off an email to novation or thomann and see what is shipping with it now).

if youre playing guitar a midi foot trigger might be useful - like this http://www.thomann.de/ie/behringer_fcb_1010.htm - to trigger tracks in ableton

recommend downloading the trial version of Live and see how you get on http://www.ableton.com/download-suite-trial (30 day full working) - have a play with it on your current computer and inbuilt sound card - see how you get on before spending loads of cash... (nb If you know anyone in fulltime education you can get an education discount from ableton

all in all €150+ for the novation nio will get you started

    Hey

I do exactly what you're talking about live with my band. Stereo backing synths/strings and stereo percussion tracks going to FOH, and a separate click going to drummer's headphones.

We use full version of ableton because as said before, intro only has 2 outputs. We need more in order to sends the different tracks out separately.

I use an m-audio firewire 410 live, it as 8 analogue line outs, so 1-2 is the synths/strings 3-4 is the percussion they go to FOH via DI boxes and 5 is the click goes directly to drummer's headphones.

    Hope this helps
