Hoping someone out there has had experience with this sort of situation.

My 17 y.o. daughter will soon do the driving theory test and wants to get a car in next few weeks. Cars are relatively cheap but I am expecting the insurance premium to be huge. She will have a provisional licence.

I have been told that the cheapest option is for me to insure myself to drive the car and put her down as a named driver. I have about 15 years no claims and am old enough to get insurance for about 400 euro.

    ANy advice or opinions appreciated.

My sister recently did this for her daughter. €1k to insure a 1 litre car, with her daughter insured as a named driver.
The draw back is she has to go everywhere with her as its the law on a permit.
    HTH's.

My dad tried to do that for me. The thing is you can only use your no claims bonus on one car so if you were to insure your daughter on a second car to your own you will have no no-claims bonus. That might drive the cost up?

Try Quinn i though they were quite fair and some of the online insurance sites! Shop around is all i can say.

A moot point, but she will have a Learner's Permit, not a provisional licence.

I hope you do not intend to let her drive unaccompanied?

The cheapest option for you is to tell her to get a job and pay her own insursnce.
If she cant afford a car and all that go with it tell her to get a bike or make other arrangements like we all had to do before the celtic ****up

In regards to your NCB you will have 0 on the new policy for your daughter's car as your NCB will have to remain on your main policy which will be your own car. It will still be cheaper than if she were to get insured alone.

However she won't be building up any NCB of her own. She will only be able to have named driving experience. Just a note to remember for when she's looking for insurance quotes in the future.

Also the daughters car may have to be put in your name from the start to avoid any hassle in event of an accident. EG you're main policy holder but not the main driver etc. Some insurance companies prob won't even insure you unless it's your name or your partners to begin with as it would be viewed you don't have any financial interest in the car.

Cop on and stop posting off-topic rubbish. The OP is looking for advice on getting insurance, not on parenting.
