    Hi all,
I am goin out of my mind here and could really do with your help!!
My laptop (Sony Vaio)was working fine today,i had shut it down and left it and as i went to turn it on later that night the screen went blue and system recovery options came up..i tried loading the hard drive but i do not have the installation cd that it was asking for(no idea where i left it)!! so i turned it off again, came back to it again bout half hour later and it now has a black screen and says "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND"
Im hoping im not gonna have to fork out loads to get it fixed and would greatly appreciate any feedback on ways or if any to fix it myself! :(

Not 100% sure there should a windows.old folder, after fresh install.

Did you google no operating system found?

You should have a windows disk included with your laptop. On there, you might have a "system repair" option, which is worth checking out; it should fix things AND save your data.

If that doesn't work, the Master Boot Record (MBR) might just be fried (although how it got fried is another story). Just google for your windows version and "fixmbr". You'll find instructions on how to do what you need. You'll also need your installation disk handy in order to do this. (although if the above option doesn't work, this might not either)

And if THAT fails, reinstall. I'm fairly certain you'll lose your data, but you won't have to pay someone to repair it for you.

    Hope that helps.

It sounds like there might be a problem with your hard-disk, did it take a large bang recently?

Normally laptops like the Vaio's have a "recovery" sector on the main harddrive but they also prompt you to make backup disks.... i know alot of people ignore this prompt though.

If you have no disk you could try contacting sony and seeing would they issue with a disk. The windows key should be on the bottom of the laptop on a sticker so you dont need a new copy of windows.

If you get this you should be okay to try install windows again provided you dont format the drive you wont lose your data... if it fails then your drive is deffo gone.
