    Hi,

I am looking at adding an additional floor to an extension at home. Originally this section of the house was built as a garage with a flat roof but over the years has been converted to a section of the house. I am now looking to close off the flat roof of the garage/extension and build another room on top of the extension. The house was originally built in the 70’s. Looking at the original planning drawings the walls look to have been constructed as block on flat. Is there any checks that I should undertake to check the foundations? I am thinking of building the upper floor with light weight blockwork to reduce the load on the foundations.

The flat roof is a made of concrete and was designed a veranda. Is there anything that I should look for specifically with this roof. I would like to try and keep it.

Any input/experiences from anyone in dealing with extensions for houses built in the 70s is appreciated.

re foundations, carefully dig some trial holes to assess the depth of foundations, then call in structural engineer to confirm there adequate before you consider building first floor extension.

re roof, mods here will not allow structural advice and rightly so as every situation is different. get an engineer to do a site visit, the more experienced the better, you may pay a premium but you'll get a more creative solution.

Re: lightweight blockwork for upper walls. Get engineers advice.

You will probably need to get planning permission before moving forward with this.
