Hi everyone, just looking for a bit of advice, I have a 2007 Audi A4, recently I have been thinking about selling it but I havent done anything about it as of yet. In hindsight I wish I did sell it sooner as the turbo has just gone in it,I dont know why it went or if its very common. I have got a few prices for a new turbo but they are crazy expensive. Im in two minds as to whether I should just trade it in the way it is, but Im afraid Ill get very little for it. any idea how garages would react t the turbo gone or what they might give me for it against a newer car, Maybe I should fix it and get the new turbo? Im just hoping nothing else will go wrong with it, any advice is very welcome as I cant make my mind up! thanks in advance ;)

Fix it, its your only real option I would think. garages will screw you if it needs work.

Thanks Mickdw, I thought that but I kind of wanted someone else to say it! :-) I also thought maybe the garage wouldnt notice that the turbo was gone but Im assuming thats unlikely! I just cant understand how its gone, I look after it like a baby and get it serviced regularly, its so sickening!!

Are you 100% sure its the turbo ?

    What are the symptoms ?

I'd go for a reconditioned one.

    Try these guys?

not a hundred percent sure its the turbo, had oil leaking for awhile sent it to a mechanic and he said he thought the turbo was gone! I have never used this mechanice before so Im sending it to my own mechanic tomorrow and praying he doesnt think its the turbo!! if it is then I guess Ill have to buy another one and be broke for the next few months!

You'd get a turbo for pittance off a scrap yard, recondition it for about as much and would be able to fit it yourself if your anyway handy with a tool box. Would be a shame to sell her off over a turbo if you have minded it so well. As a matter of interest, did you EVER run it when it was low in oil as alot of B7's are know to burn oil between services

    Is it 1.9 or 2.0?

Could be anything then, when you go to your own mechanic don't mention the turbo, putting an idea in someones head can make them thing thats the cause straight away.

If its intermittant or low power its possible it could be the Mass Airflow Meter (Common issue)

But really shouldn't jump to conclusions.

thanks for your replies, Im afraid to drive it at the mo incase I do anymore damage to it, Im going to give it to my normal mechanic and see what he says. Fingers crossed its not the turbo. By the way Its a 1.9TDI, Ive never drove it when the oil was low. Has anyone else ever had a turbo reconditioned or bought one that was? If I have to get one I was thinking of getting a new one so That there wouldnt be further problems but if I knew that others had got reconditioned ones and they are working well then I might consider one of them.

Certainly don't drive it too far without continually checking the oil, if its the bearing thats gone it can empty your engine of oil very quickly, which will sieze the engine - happened to me with a 1.9tdi.

I got a turbo reconditioned from england, not sure if it was ok but it came with a warranty. Some people advise against using reconditioned ones but I sold the car before I put many miles on it.

Most important thing to try to figure is why did the turbo blow in the first place. Do you use the right oil changed at the right intervals. Do you drive the car off boost after startup and before shutdown. Is the oil pump buggered.

Incedently the same thing has happened to my da's A6 recently and it looks like the oil pump went which has done the turbo and god know what else.

Surely if the turbo is in a bad way it'll be smoking a lot due to burning oil in the turbo? And by leaking oil do you mean actually leaking, or using up an unusual amount of oil?

It is actually leaking oil to the right side of the engine, It hasnt been smoking alot, I did notice it smoking the other day after I turned off the engine But I had not noticed smoking before that. As I said I havent really been driving it since the mechanic said he thought the turbo was gone, getting it looked at 2moro by my own mechanic so Ill see what he thinks. I might look into getting a reconditioned turbo, would be alot cheaper than buying a new one, any advice on this is welcome

TOTALLY CONFUSED!!! my mechanic says the turbo isnt gone that the leak is coming from some gasket, this gasket I was told by the last mechanic that he changed it? obviously he didnt or there is something major wrong.... anyone got any idea why it could be leaking oil?? or any advice??

Is it coming from the diesel filter?

Mine was leaking too. My MPG has improved greatly since it was fixed

FFS....if your mechanic can't pin point the cause of your problem, change your mechanic.:pac:

The OPs yoke is leaking oil from what they've said.
Was yours difficult to start when the filter was leaking diesel?

    OP

I think you need to bring your car to another mechanic.

As I suspected he just assumed it was the turbo when he wasnt really sure (expensive) and now thinks its something else.

This would say to me he doesnt have a clue what he's doing.

You might be best off going to a recommended indy if you give your location here maybe someone would know a guy.

From what i gather he had brought it to the first garage who advised him the turbo may be gone and fixed a leaking gasket. Now he has the car at his usual mechanic (different garage) who do not think the turbo is gone but there is still a leak from the gasket. So at this point he has 2 opinions from separate garages, I may have picked things up wrong tho.

dunno if its from the diesel filter, he said he thinks its from the Rocker cover gasket or something like that??? gonna ask him to check that out! its so annoying!

Rocker Cover gasket you could change yourself in 20 mins, they do piss oil but wont do any real damage. Wouldnt explain your lack of power

Sorry Im only after seeing the other replies, yes I had my car at one mechanic who I wouldnt go to as hes in another county, but out of convenience as I was travelling with work I went to him, he said he thought the leak was from the gasket, so he ordered a new one and changed it. Then when the leak continued he said it was the turbo, at this stage I started looking into prices of turbos etc. I made an appointment with a different mechanic for a second opinion (this was with the mechanic I would usually use) and he said the leak is coming from the gasket, when I said it had been changed he said it def. hasnt been touched, now I dont know what to do!!!:eek: Do I pay to have it changed again or do I go back to the first mechanic and explain that whatever he did hasnt worked and I want it fixed???

Never no apart from when it froze in December.

The diesel filter housing has a tendancy to warp due to poor materials. It was corrected in the later models afaik.

The reason I thought it might be that is because the diesel made a right old mess of the engine on that side and it looked like an oil leak at first

Oil leak can be tough to find alright, but you have clean everything and place a piece of white paper underneath the engine, then follow the trail back.

Its all patience really, but some mechanics will just start randomly changing stuff becuase they couldn't be arsed.

What county are you from? Get someone who knows what they are talking about to have a look at it

    Me?

I'm in Wicklow now and Tipperary tomorrow (and everywhere in between) if that any good but I'm no mechanic but will gladly have a look if you want.

But I can explain where to check.

The diesel filter is a tubular casing on the left hand side of the engine a bit forward of it. Its generally black but can have a silver casing also. There will be 4 pipes entering it on the top. Diesel can pool on top in my case and leak everywhere after that. The staining in my case was large spreading from the engine block itself and down along the wheel arch lining. I didn't realise it was as bad until I booked a service. Your diesel usage will be up also and it could but not always have starting issues

EDIT: Sorry just realised my spaktard mistake
