Thinking of a project car, ideas

    Hey All,
Thinking of starting a new project in coming months. Few things I know I want are: Rear wheel and most likely a nissan. I would love a skyline but tbh the only one the GF would agree on would be a GTR33 and not sure if I'd have that cash to put into a second car which would be a project car only. I want to do a total rebuild on it to achieve a few things - not bothered about turbo but I want a colour coded engine air breather etc + I want it to have individual throttle bodies (as much for the look of it as anything else).
Want to fit a full drift spec suspension but one that will pass the nct
Bolted roll cage for the nct
Want to fit a custom interior with entertainment system
Want it to be white with stickers so a respray will probably have to happen.

Based on the above can anyone recommend the easiest car to do all this on. Planning on buying the car this summer but dont expect it to be done for approx 18 months to 2 years so I wont be putting too much of a financial drain on myself. Will be a car for weekends / rally weekends etc so running costs arent going to be the biggest issue either.

I know people are going to say how am I planning on doing it up if I cant afford the GTR from the start but would be a big kick all at once.

Also, plan on doing pretty much everything I can to it but things above are just a few of the early plans!

    Cheers

S13/S14 are cheap enough but a lot of them will have been ragged, there's also the S15 but they're more expensive(dunno your budget?)

If its the look of the R33 GTR that your g/f likes then you could get a GTS-T and put the GTR kit on it to keep her quiet. Have a look at R32's too.

If you have a bit more to spend, there's the 350z and the 350gt.

TBH I dont have a budget atm. I'd prob be thinking in the region of 5 / 8 k for the car but as I said engine etc won't have to be perfect as I'd like to get a rebuild and hopefully shove it up by 2bar / 350 - 400 bhp by the time it would be finished. All in all I would prob be thinking of maybe 12 / 18 k over the whole project so I think a 350z would be out of the equation

If your thinking Nissan and RWD Id buy a S14 or the English Spec touring model. The english spec'd ones can be got for handy money here..

If I had the money id buy a Nissan Stagea, they are mad looking yokes. Surely you could find one that needs a bit of TLC?

    Road legal drift car basically?

You do realise insurance companies will run a mile once you start listing the mods list... which will cause even more hassle for a "weekend" car.

Cage doesn't need to be a bolt in to pass the NCT, however, I'd avoid putting in one altogether, or only make it a half-cage for the back. If you do crash on a normal road, you'll only end up worse off - they're intended for use with proper racing harnesses and helmets, not a normal seatbelt and your skull...

Also the best of luck to you if you intend on trying to drift a GTR at some stage, they're 4WD.

I think you need to put a little bit more thought into it before deciding anything just yet... (not trying to put you off it - fecking love nissan projects and would definately be interested to see a build thread) as it seems like you've just thrown a few ideas together without thinking about them properly....

You can drift AWD in a GT-R, ATTESA-ETS allows you to nominate torque to all the wheels, front wheels, rear wheels or distribute evenly!

What the system is actually designed to do (as far as I can make out) is to counter traction loss....

Also, despite the controller you have to buy to enable user control of the system being cheap (under 400) - the system wasn't a standard item on all GTR's, unless V-Spec. It is however on the GTS4's...

Mervyn's car is fu*cking mint who ever he is! That would be the dream.

Roll cage would be 100% for visual appearance rather than anything else tbh (I know, I'm pathetical stupid doing it).

O it needs an absolutely crazy amount of thought I know. I'd be the sort who would probably buy most of the parts and do a full spec before buying the car. Hitting problems and fixing them as I'm going along would prob just annoy me.

Would I be screwed on insurance if I was just transferring my own policy for a weekend and paying an excess? I would love to get into drifting etc but I'd much rather have a fully kitted car for showing off rather than a car stripped to bare bones would be my reasoning. Would prob be more of a show car driver than a tyre burning one :(

The spec on them Nissan Stagea looks unreal but I'd say I would be single if I asked d gf to get into an estate looking rig regardless of the spec ha

Most insurance companys only allow a certain number of transfers during the year, so transferring back/forth every weekend wouldn't be feesable and would cost a bomb I'd imagine.

If I got it about 6 times a year I would be happy out. As the old lad has only a commercial policy I could let it sit in his name the rest of the time too prob to make it easier

I'd advise ALOT more research before you buy anything.

None on the top drift cars run near 2 bar, on Nissan engines, thats drag racing territory.

Nissan SR and RB engines can easily touch 400hp on 1.4bar when tuned correctly, RB26 engines(GTR) can get up to 450-460 at 1.4 bar.

You also need to decide what you are going to build, you are talking about 'drift spec' suspension and roll cages and then saying you want a custom interior and sound system.

Remember, Max Power magazine doesn't exist any more.:P
