When my grandfather died about ten years ago he left his house and land to his 3 grown up children. They went to a solicitor to sort this out. The solicitor was responsible for all the work involved, including valuations, probate tax calculation etc. Recently he estimated his bill at 10k including VAT. Is this a normal fee?

The information you give is limited, but my first reaction is that it is not obviously excessive. [The amount of work involved varies greatly from case to case, so it is difficult to give a better answer than that.]

You have to factor in that there is a conveyance involved, which could easily come to a few thousand euros to begin with, even if it wasn't complicated at all. Added to that that there is quite a lot of responsibility on the solicitor if anything goes wrong, and he has to consider the interests of a number of people. There is also a certain amount of outlay involved, so it is important to figure out what the total budget is.

It's normally done on a % of the estate. This should have been agreed beforehand (Section68 Letter). You would probably get better answers in Legal Issues forum.
