This was the route they used last year, I'd assume it won't change all that much

That's the route indeed - setting out from Ballina/Killaloe @ 10.30 (sign on from 9.30) the 120Km will go clockwise around Lough Derg - foodstop in Portumna Forest Park and food a-plenty at the Laheside Hotel on return. The 50Km will leave the same location @ 12 noon (sign on from 11) and travel along the N7 to Nenagh and back along the lakeshore to Ballina/Killaloe

Might be interested in this, whats the entrance fee?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 528 ✭✭✭michaelm

€10 if you have licence and €20 if you don't. It is the annual club tour of The North Tipp Wheelers, normally controlled at approx 28-30Km/hr for the first 80 Km or so - then usually devlops into a dash for the finish for those that wish to let loose.

The license should only cost €1 on a €10 euro entry fee.

Completed the 120K yesterday. Definately an eye-opener! only started cycling 2 months ago and have done up to 100K on my own but I found the pace and wind very tough.

Puncture did not help and was on my own for most of the way back from Portumna. You know you are in trouble when the ambulance and Broomwagon are right behind you asking are you ok every 2 K! Demoralising at times.....

Well organised and plenty of food and drink in Portumna, needed it as the 10 K after the stop was hell! Just watching all the club cyclist burn off into the horizon is definately a motivator for getting my a$$ out on the bike more often.

Don't be demoralised - yesterday was tough! Also worth noting that this was a "Club Tour" rather than a Sportive - and as such was mainly advertised through Cycling Ireland with the result that most of the participants were club cyclists. If you take part in any of the Sportives (e.g - An Post series or some of the numerous charity events) I guarantee you won't have the broom wagon right behind you. Well done on getting around Lough Derg in those conditions and an even greater achievement to complete the second half on your own!

Did a few rides around silvermines last few weeks, thought i was great! nothing like a club cycle to bring me back to the real world.

It has made me more eager to get on the bike and I will definately look out for the tour of Lough Derg 2012 and hopefully see an improvement.

@keyboard warrior - if your based around the area what about going out with the north tipp wheelers on some of their training spins? if your interested pm me. There is nothing like training with a club to get your fitness up.

It was a tough day yesterday in that wind. You did very well to get around, especially if you were out on your own. When the lead group took off about 5k before Portroe hill, and I was doing 40-45km/hr into the wind just to try and hang on the back I knew I was in big trouble. Blew up big time on the hill then :pac:

Despite the weather, it was a great day though.

Are you sure this didn't take place at the weekend just gone? If you look at their Facebook page it sounds like it was done. Will bang them off an email to find out as I'd like to do it if it's not done already.

Ok - dates and being on time aint my strong points. Ha. i'm a week behind the times. Right - Limerick tour it is so.
