Boris Johnson turns out to vote sporting an unsightly black eye

"I had a helmet on and couldn't see," he said.

He came to vote with wife Marina, with whom he has been trying to mend his relationship after allegations of his infidelity surfaced last year.

Methinks his helmet may not be to blame for his black eye.....

    How?

I can't see how a helmet would obstruct you to cause you to cycle into a barrier at eye level. I mean a helmet that blocks things at eye level would be pretty pointless, unless you are Luke Sky-walker or something.

They probably prevent or ameliorate cuts, lacerations and minor concussions. I can't think of any other advantages they have.

Mind you, neither, as Boston B says, can I think of how they could obstruct your vision, unless you were wearing one very loose and pushed forward over your eyes.

Well if they stop you from seeing whats in front of you, I'm surprised more politicians don't wear them.

This reminds me that Boris Johnson had a narrow miss a while back. A truck passed him on a straight-ish section of road at some speed. Then the rear door of the truck flew open, speared a parked car on the opposite side of the road, lifted it out of its parking space and hurled it at Johnson and his colleagues, who were cycling a proposed route for a cycling highway at the time. Complete freak accident.

The CCTV footage used to be on YouTube, but it's gone now. It was pretty breath-taking, if I recall correctly.

    EDIT: Here it is:

A badly fitted/secured helmet could possibly obstruct your visibility, it's hardly an indictment of all helmets & helmet wearing.

You may as well say wearing an overcoat can obstruct visibility (but again, only if it's worn incorrectly).
