    wohoo it's back!!
I only googled this last week to check when it was coming around again this year and I couldn't find a thing.

Edit:Bollox! The only 2 chippers that it applies to in Galway are nowhere near Galway City:mad:

On Arthur's Day when Guinness is 'celebrated', do we see pubs giving half price Guinness? No. If only the scummy publicans were as appreciative of their source of life as the chipper men are

Is it on anything other than fish?
Is it on Fish AND chips.
    Is it on just chips?
    mmm chips.

If I remember from last year, you have to buy the fish and the chips. Believe me, it's not too much of a hardship. It was a good price, as far as I can recall. Well worth getting.

I'd advise getting the offer early, as they ran out of fish later in some places.

This was VERY messy last year, I won't be bothering again this year, huge queues in chippers, they ran out of fish in my local, people were turning up and when they were told there was no fish they ended up ordering other stuff at full price so the chipper owners still made a killing, stinks of a scam meethinks:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,606 ✭✭✭schemingbohemia

In fairness to them, I think it's very harsh calling it a scam. Do you not think they might have just misjudged the demand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭Travel is good

I don't think it was a scam, just a really good deal. The chippers misjudged the interest in the offer.

I know someone who supplies to the chippers & I am now tipping them off to make sure they have plenty of supplies in.

Yes, I realise that some chippers ran out of fish later on. However, once you realise that the special offer is only on the fish and the chips, then it should be OK.

I'm still going to try and get this offer, I'll be going to the chipper early!

    1) Fish isn't what I get when I go to a chipper so meh

    2) If you have to queue for 3 or 4 times longer than usual to get stuff then it ceases to be a bargain for me.

    3) If after all that queueing you are told "theres no fish" left....I'd be furious. Especially since its only the Fish and chips that is discounted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭Travel is good

OK, if you only want chips, then there is no point in going to the chipper on that day.

You won't have to queue for hours if you go early. I went last year about 7pm and wasn't waiting long at all.

Obviously if you leave it too late (like after 8pm or so) there might be the possibility that the fish will run out. I have found it's the same with any other special offer/bargain alert - you have to get it early.

Anyway, you're not putting me off, I'm still going to try to get the fish and chip offer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,728 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I can't believe you think 8pm would be too late for a chipper.

Surely 8pm onwards is when they do the majoirty of their business? Not having enough fish for those hours is poor form imo - they had last year to suss this out and should be a better job this year.

think scam is going a bit too far, last year was their first time doing it, hopefully they'll be a bit better prepared.
I'm lucky to be on a day off that day, so I'll get it for lunch at noon in my local.
as everyone else has said, don't wait til 8 or 9 to go in expecting them to automatically have lots left

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭kiddums

There isn't a single chipper in my entire county doing this.:(

Some were selling other stuff half price, dunno about just getting chips though, this was last years (long) thread with people talking about what happened.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=2055917167

as I said in that thread --People queuing an hour to save a few euro is a bit mad though, the queues etc does show you it was a genuine offer, unlike the takeaway pizza places bogus half price/BOGOF deals/nonoffers.

A few chippers have good lunchtime deals nowadays, some are copping on.

There is only one chipper in waterford taking part, but it's the best chipper in town anyway:)

I went down last year for it, there was a bit of a queue but I don't remember it being awful or anything...if I'm around I'll definitely head down!

I had free Guinness in my local all night a few years back?
The barstaff kept pouring up and handing out. :)

Of course Mcdonagh's in Galway wont be doing it, just the thought of them giving something for value would send them into a tailspin.

I expect they will try cut a few corners, but once they don't try pass off a slab of previously frozen fish as "fresh" I won't complain.
