I won't be doing this one as I am away for the w/e.
However I was passing the Black Valley climb the other day and I saw a 40km sign up.
I had a look at the profile.
1st bit of climbing is Gap of Dunloe. If youve not been up it before it's like a set of stairs. Long flat bits punctuated by extremely steep short ramps.
Great but technical descent to Black Valley.
The floor of the Black Valley is a dead lumpy road. It's always windy down there.
2nd climb is a 2pm climb out of the black valley for Molls Gap. Mostly 8% with some a bit more.
Few drags around Blackwater and Sneem.
3rd major climb is tough. A 5km drag at 3% on average brings you to the base of Ballaghbeama. 2km climb with last km over 15%.
A technical descent to Glencar Valley.

    A tough enough route. Enjoy.

i was wondering if it went through there. i tell ya, i did the "ride for life" during the tour of irelands 2009 killarney stage. it was my first time in an "event". prior i had never ridden more than 45km. it was an eye opener for me as it went through the gap of dunloe, down the black valley and up molls gap just as you described. it humbled me, cause i thought i could cycle. ha! little fool was i.the little nipples around cork i was riding were not the "hills" i thought they were.

i have a livestrong yellow flash card i got at the finish of the stage and on it i wrote "aug 22/2009 ->85k , 4:20 -> humbled but finished. you can improve! never give up!" it sits on my cycling wall where i keep the medals i've gotten since, my training schedule and upcoming events i've entered or plan to. i look at that thing every day. i have been looking forward to doing that run again and now i know i am! thanks for the info!

I think last year the 100km route was anti clockwise. Could be wrong. But I'm sure someone will confirm.

I did the Humpy Hundred last year and as rash says it was anticlockwise. I haven't heard if there is to be a change in direction, hopefully, I'll make it for a club spin this week and find out. Either way it's hard work:D

this was a tough race last year with several little crashes, tons of punctures and a very bad surface on the descent into the black valley. use your training wheels if you're going. i'll be giving this one a skip but knowing the killorglin club say it should be a very well organised, well run event.

The route will be anti-clockwise again this year, no doubt it will be a cracking pace to Ballaghbeama. I see that a loop around Sneem has been added for those who wish to increase the distance to 130km.

I did an over and back spin on Ballaghbeama this morning

Road from Glencar has been freshly resurfaced. So it's good for Kerry - tar with chippings as opposed to smooth blacktop.
In the last km you climb 90m. The max gradient is 14%.

The descent is a different story. Road is not in good shape. It's a 1.2pm descent at -12% average. A pretty big drop on your left as one descends. Lots of gravel, grass, bumps and potholes.
Take it easy on the descent. Very little recovery room if you make a mistake.
That said it is stunning (if a little desolate).

Once off the descent the road from the base to the Sneem/Molls gaps road is in reasonable condition.

Will be doing this......had planned on cycling from limerick to sneem for a weeks holidays, but 130k sounds a bit better than the 165k from limerick to sneem

Did the 100km route, well run, great fun. The descent from Ballaghbeama was indeed pretty scary, I managed a skid just after telling someone to be careful! Thanks for the warning ROK ON.

All credit due to killorglin cc. Well run event with a great route. Did the 130k and the pace car set a blistering pace. tough event, the fast pace meant that it felt tougher to me than longer events like the W200......it deserves a better turn-out. The only improvement I could see would be a safety statement about the descents/better marshalling. All of the descents were very technical and I saw 3 riders come off.....

What exactily are you looking for in a 'safety statement about the descents'?
Were you not able to see the road that you were on, and ride accordingly? Do you want event organiser to provide a 'safety statement' saying "the descents are technical", or "the descent are not technical".
Or should the 'safety statement' make some statement that insults riders intelligence by saying "you should adjust your riding to suit the type or road you are riding on".
'Safety statements for riders for a sportive' - Bah Humbug!

yeah i was one of them. even after ROK ON's warning i thought i was going slow, but still managed to overcook a corner where a lad was already on the ground, and another fell two minutes later. broke a collarbone i think, going to get it checked out destroyed my derailler and handlebars. good day though.

    do it again next year!

    Sorry to hear that Corkchef.

IMHO, this is not a descent that a group should descend. I would have run the event in the other direction. Just my tuppence worth.
