Freehub Problem

EDIT: Wrong forum, if a mod could move it in to the main one that'd be great

I do intend to bring it in to the LBS but just wondering if anyone has had the same issue.

I got a new set of mavic aksiums recently, there is only a few hundred km on them so far. I was descending around Ballinastoe when a nasty squealing, grating sound came from the bike. I pulled in, checked the wheels and brakes and everything seemed ok. It continued to happen intermittently but generally when descending above 30kph.

Looking down when the noise happens, it looks like the freehub is seizing and attempting to rotate while I am freewheeling, making the chain slack on the top run, I wasn't able to see what was happening with the RD. Starting to pedal then gets it going again.

A ton of people here have aksiums so maybe someone has experienced it before, or maybe I'm completely wrong and it's not the hub at all...

your problem is there is a rubber seal behind the freehub body between the hub and body that gets dry and starts dragging against each other and starts whining.
bring it to your local bike shop and ask them to remove the freehub and put oil on the seal ..
i have my own shop and know this problem real well//

If it happens when you're freewheeling then the problem is that the bushing in the freehub body has worn.

It happens, sometimes faster for some than others but is an inevitability with Mavic wheels. Search for 'hubdoctor' on ebay, they do replacement bushings which are cheaper than a new freehub unit and a bearing kit that can be used to replace the bushing entirely.

Thanks for the replies, the shop took care of it for me during the week, it was the rubber seal that was causing the problem

I said it was that . Very common problem . Made worse when hub heats up when freewheeling . What shop fixed it ?
