    and if I remember correctly, (or it used to be) only other iPhone owners can see the smiles.

    I dont think that other phones can see them emoticons from an iPhone

    yep you will need an emoji app. You will find a free on in there so dont pay for one no matter what it promises. Once you have set up emoji you can delete the app as you dont need it anymore.

    Only other iphone/ipad/ipod touch users can see your emoji.

    only other iphones, ipods, ipads etc can see the smiles when sent.
