VAT Vs Expenses

    Hello,

I need a simple explanation as to what I can claim VAT on. I've read the revenue.ie website, but I'm a still a bit unclear as to what I'm aloud claim.

I'm an IT professional, with a limited company.

For example, over the last two months I incurred the following expenses (all paid for out of my personal money):

Mobile Phone (personal phone but used for business)
Chamber of Commerce Membership Fees (No VAT specified on receipt)
Networking Meetings Fees (No VAT specified on receipt)
Brackets to fix Laptop screen (brackets purchased from Northern Ireland)
Home Broadband (I work from home sometimes)

I know all of these are expenses incurred while trying to earn a profit, so I understand that I am entitled to claim these expenses back from the company in full. But, can I claim VAT back on any of these ?

    Any help appreciated.

    Regards

In order to be able to claim back VAT, you would have to be registered for VAT and charging VAT to your Customers.

The Revenue website has a full explanation on revenue.ie.

As above you need ot be registered for VAT to claim it back.

Assuming you are, you will only be able to claim back for the portion of phone and broadband that are used in relation to the business.

You can also only claim back the business portion from the the company. Look at revenue.ie and search VAT and it will give you plenty of informative leaflets.
