I wonder whether they're going to end up a credible hunting species or just going to be a blip on the radar. If the former, it would be very nice to have an established year round deer hunting species.

They should put it on a recent newspaper but then again I wouldn't put every fox I shot on one, just to prove it was shot in ireland if you know what I'm saying? I got the pic off the deer association of Ireland, so thought it would be okie dokie but you wouldn't know? Osama still lives !! :D

I was chatting to a friend of mine about muntjack the other day and he said his brothers friend shot one this year; when I asked where, he said an area which is close to where the lads said this one was shot and where they say they saw the others.

well, it would be one way to end the debate if somone does shoot one here in Ireland .Take a pic of it with a national Irish paper with the headline nice and clear and the date.If you are really brave ,throw in a local rag as well to give a clue as to where it was shot.;)

I did see a muntjac a few summers ago in South Wicklow. I was out with the 22 and had to look several times to believe my eyes. They really are tiny!

Not my place to say where but they were both shot in areas close to each other;). Personally I doubted they were in the country but I have no reason to doubt what I was told in these cases

I'll be happier when I've a couple of them hanging in the shed now. :p

id be very surprised if someone would tell you where they shot them, similar to asking for good pheasant spots in a gun club;) theyll send you the opposite directions:D im not sure if it was shot in Ireland or not but the person claims it was

I've no reason to doubt either claim and it's for this exact reason why I'm not saying where I heard they were shot; it's someone else's hunting ground and if the shoe was on the other foot I wouldn't like lads landing into my spots;).

it would be very nice to have an established year round deer hunting species.

And you, as a deer hunter, is supposed to eradicate them........nice

It's something of a conflict alright. It's been said before that their nature is such that by the time you're seeing them, they're too well established to be eradicated. Then there's the question of their real environmental impact and which species they compete with to the detriment of native wildlife (There was something posted on that which I recall being interesting but can't remember where to even look now). Personally, if I see them, I'll shoot them, but I'm not going to make a crusade of it either, and if I start seeing them regularly, I'll start shooting them regularly, but if I never wipe them out, well, so be it. I'm not going to lose sleep. They'll just be another animal to fit into the management plan, and I'll consult resources in England and figure out how best to do it.

    Fair enough IWM,
Just a fair amount of deer shooters wouldnt mind having them here, as an "all round species". I find this funny as they are the only ones allowed shoot them, when the NPWS want them gone. Do ya understand where im coming from?

Oh I get it, but it's a legislative issue, and when there are guys with deer licences there, they can shoot them, while it would require scheduled Dail debate time and the drafting of an amendment to the wildlife act to allow for the shooting of muntjac by people without a deer licence. Obviously, that's not the highest priority in the world these days, so it's not happening. That's my interpretation from the year round season anyway. It's as much as they can do without involving the legislature (and we're all painfully familiar with how efficient that is). As to whether they're a good idea, I personally don't have the expertise to say. Now, I know that if I see one, and provided it's a buck or a heavily pregnant doe, in accordance with best practice, I'm going to shoot it and keep a sharp eye out for others, which will follow suit, but I'm a recreational hunter. I'm not industrially culling the well established native deer species we do have, so certainly amn't going to be much of an asset to any sort of eradication policy except in an incidental capacity, because I don't have time for it. You could go too far the other way. If you remove their protected status then you'd have lads taking cracks at them with shotguns and .22 rimfires and the like and a lot of wounded deer. Much smarter would be to allow the use of .22 centrefires which produce 1000 ft/lbs, as in England for these small deer species (and, while you're at it, up the minimum for our normal deer species to a 6mm, but that's another argument) and that lets the lads with dedicated foxing rifles get in on it as well.
