You will need to give some more info.

Have you transfered all your media to the new laptop from your old laptop or are you trying to transfer your media via your apple hardware?

I was hoping to just plug the Ipod into the new lap top and sync with the new machine but that doesn't seem to be happening .... I'm getting a message saying it'll erase files !!!
I think I should mention here that I have VERY limited technology understanding so I'd appreciate any advice

    Thanks

The iPod won't share over to the computer unless you get software specifically to do that. Google it, or use the search facility here, it has been asked lots of times in the past.

Basically on you new laptop whats in your itunes on the pc is what will be on the ipod if you sync. So if you have one song in itunes there will be one song on your ipod. Like the last post suggested get software to copy everything off the ipod to your itunes. Once there all there click sync, it will say the erase message again but click ok, it will ease your ipod and sync everything thats on your itunes to the ipod, so it will be all good :D
