It depends on the place, they can set whatever price they like as far as I know. Usually, most wouldn't charge when you are not there, but some might charge half-rent at Christmas and Easter (note UCD has Easter holidays in or around from the beginning of March to mid March regardless of when Easter falls due).

If you're talking about student accomodation, you will have to pay the full year unfortunately because your get you key or your student card activated for either a semester or a whole year, they can't afford to do that before and after Christmas and Spring. Plus, they don't have any proof that you're not in the appartment.

You have for to pay the whole year because when you register you have to choose between semester or year rent and the price is set according to that choice and so is the license to reside that you have to sign at the beginning of the occupancy.

I think they can't financially afford to make such arrangements because they would lose a lot of money if each and every single student was to claim such arrangement since most students go home for Christmas and Spring.

He's not talking about on-campus accommodation, he means student digs where you live off campus with a family.

    The UCD Residences page says:
    Privately Managed Off Campus Accommodation

Some students prefer the relative quiet and homely comforts of lodging with a family. We hold a list of families who offer bed, breakfast and evening meal for either five or seven days per week. Other students prefer to rent an apartment or a house which can also find on the listing.

To search this list go to www.findahome.ie . Under the heading "Colleges" choose "Dublin" and then "UCD". When asked for the login password type "belfield" and submit. You will now be able to search the listings.

    Indicative Residential fees for "Digs"
Monday to Friday with meals: €147 per week approximately
Monday to Sunday with meals: €170 per week approximately
Note: The above rates are only an indication of the rates on our prior experience. Rents are set by the family who own the home and may vary on the type of facilities offered.
