The 1.6 FSi engine in the Golf was rare enough in this country due to the price of them, most 1.6 litre models would be the old 8 valve 5 speed version. Don't have anything solid on them but heard they were not greatest, it was introduced in 2004 but was dropped in the Golf in 2007 and replaced with the more powerful and fuel efficent 1.4 TSi engines.

A few years ago I had a '05 A3 1.6FSI Ambition 115bhp with the 6 speed gearbox. Thought it was very economical.

    Thanks for the reponse.
So it was a pretty short lived engine? 2004-2007. That might not be a good thing.
Any idea about when timing belt would be due?

At a guess, I would imagine timing belt would need to be done @ 100,000 kms or 62,000 miles. I'm open to correction on this as it varies according to make and model.

I also had the same engine in an A3. It never gave me any trouble, it was relatively economical and was much more refined/modern than the alternative old 8-valve 1.6 that was most commonly sold.

    It was completely gutless though!

It was short-lived because the introduction of the 1.4 TSI engines kinda made it redundant.

    So no major problems?
Every 60,000miles sounds about right for timing belt
Any rough idea of price? I know the passat is around the 400e mark.

She will not be interested in performance, reliable, "nice looking" and reasonably economical are the order of the day.
I floated the idea of a golf gti, she was having none of it.

its not really short lived its in lots of vag cars and it has a timing chain so less maintenance.

How about the 1.6 with the auto gearbox?
    Slower and less economical?
