Hey BeepBeep. This one seems to be advertising itself as a charity race and in fairness the entry fee is a bit steep. Since so many people have been caught out in the past thinking that their entry fee is going to Charity, can you provide any info on how much is going to Charity? Is the Bray cancer Support centre Organising the race and going to be in receipt of all profits? Or are they just the nominated charity for the race? There is basically nothing about this on the Flyer. I think people here should be given this information before deciding to do a race (in general- not just for this race in particular).

    Good point thanks for raising.

The Bray Cancer Society are the organisers and myself and a few others are just lending our experience, the majority of the entry fee is going directly to the Charity minus some minor expenses and online entry fees, etc (so far anyone involved has dontated their services or time FOC).

Thanks, that's what I tought. Of course expenses should be taken from the fees to cover costs on the day (timing, water etc), but if all the profits are going to the charity they should probably state that in the flyer. The race might get a lot more people attending if everyone is aware of that.

BeepBeep - do you have an idea yet of the course for this? Even whether it is on road/grass, and is it hilly or otherwise?

Its timing and distance fit in well for me as an interim target in advance of the Frank Duffy 10 miler, so I'd want a course that I could have a lash at.

I'll see can I get hold of a map tomorrow - I'd say it's a challenging course with a good downhill and uphill section in it - but very runable.

This will be hand timed as the aim is to keep costs low.

I can't tell from the map, is the run on grass/ trail or on tarmac? I'll be there anyway.

I was up there this evening for a meeting and this has the potential to be a cracking event.
It's a challenging course starting with a slight incline within the grounds of Powerscourt, after 1k you exit onto the Glencree road for about 400mts before heading downhill on a minor road (heading back towards the waterfall), some rolling ups and downs follow before you head back into the estate @ 4.4k and finish with a tricky uphill in the last k.
Logistically there will be changing areas, baggage area, post race massage, toilets and a BBQ, music and bouncy castle (to shake out the lactic acid :p) - so bring the family and get them to do the walk and then then can hang around for the food and fun.

You can still enter the run for €20 on runireland, was supposed to be just the early-bird price rising to €25?

Hi, I had a quick chat with the race director and based on feedback they had decided to fix the price at €20 - all going to a good cause.

Fantastic race, hope this becomes an annual event. Pity about the rain. Well done to the organisers.

    A note from the organisers:

The day in general was a great success, with fantastic support and a great turn out for both the walk and the run. Unfortunately at the top of the race there was an issue with a gate that should have been opened which not opened on time. This meant the 2 runners that were leading at that stage ran past this gate, fortunately the rest of the runners were able to proceed as planned, but impacted the overall placings.
The Race Director and organisers would like to appologise for this incident.
An official response will be posted early next week once they have had time to discuss, route cause and discuss with the 2 runners impacted.

    Thanks for everyones support today.

Surprisingly tough course for a road run, nice mix of ups and downs, and a great atmosphere. Unfortunate for the two guys in front, does anyone know if they managed to finish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭Peckham

Great race, bar the gate incident. Course was INCREDIBLY tough, and possibly unsuited to a race of this type. The very steep downhills on slippy roads could have led to some falls, especially amongst less experienced runners. The steep uphill finish was a total killer!

My first race since marathon last autumn, and first at this distance in a long time. 28:35, and 6th or 7th place I think.

I agree with you about the uphill finish, it was the first time ever in a race where I thought I was going to get sick . (First time doing an evening race and wasn't sure what to have for lunch). I walked for 30s or so and got myself going again.

That said, I'd love to do it again next year. Great views around the back of the course.

One thing I noticed was that with the uphill start the field became spread out really quickly.

122m from the lowest point to the highest!! I think we can classify this as a hill run on the roads :D Great event and fantastic looking course. I may give it a shot next year defo.

Great evening, well done all there. Our kids loved the 3 k walk, especially getting their own number to pin on themselves (they even pinned them to their PJ’s that night). Very well organised especially given the weather which must have upset the numbers on the night quite a bit.

As for the race itself, it would have been something to have been able to take in the formal gardens too but, I guess that is a possibility for another time. I had been on the final hill before so I had some notion of it; I think most runners gave up running just short of the top not knowing they were so close, as the crest was around a bend.

Take in the Gardens and pop on 3 Km for 2012.
