I've noticed that men whose hairlines are receiding or have started going bald tend to grow stubble or or a beard more than non balding men.

What is the reason for this?

Have they decided they can't be a pretty boy anymore so they have to go for the rough look instead?

Generally men with bald or thinning hair have higher levels of testerone so find it easier to grow facial hair. So may be a cause, more then an effect.

Plus it gives you more options for looking different!

Well I have a full head of hair but couldn't grow a beard to save my life so does that mean I'm a pretty boy because I can't pull off the rough look? Besides bald head with a bald face makes people look like a movie villain.

Gravity at work, as you get older the follicles start falling down from your head towards your face. You will observe as you get older that you have more body hair and later toe hair. Saves on socks!
