    of course they do.
A headphone jack is a standard connection, all headphones work in all sockets. Brand is not important.

The only time it might be an issue is where the headphone provides further functions, the new headphones, or device might not have that ability (sound still works). For example, there is no mic on standard skullcandy headphones

Or if apple recessed the socket like they did on the original iPhone...

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/30/iphone-doesnt-work-with-most-3rd-party-headphones/

I'd imagine the OP knows that normal headphones with a 3.5mm TRS jack are a standard but was unsure whether they can be used with the iPhone after hearing about the issue with the 2G iPhone (or wondering about the mic/volume ring on the supplied headphones).

You are right about the mic/volume control headphones being different though as they use a 3.5m TRRS connector with an extra ring for the mic/volume control function.

BTW OP, I've heard that skullcandy are a bit shite in terms of sound quality and are overpriced heaphones for posers. There are some good reviews too though and most half decent over ear headphones will sound better than cheap earphones to the average listener. If part of your attraction is the looks then go for it but otherwise i'd be considering something like a set of sennheisers for better quality.

Design flaw, they forgot to consider the curved part blocking some jacks from fitting.
At least i hop so, if it was intentional (to promote apple sales) it was so so stupid

Are you talkign about over-ear kind. If So i can't comment.
But the skullcandy buds are very good value. I have a pair and the sound is almost as good as my sennheisers, but they were a fraction of the cost. I'd go for skullcandy again just as I have a habit of losing them.

Yeah it was a big mistake whatever reason they had for it, probably why they fixed it on the 3G onwards.

Not sure if it's correct, but for me earphones/earbuds are the things that go in your ears and heaphones go around the head. I don't have a clue what to call the ones that clip over your ear or the ones that go round the back of your head though!

Like I said, I have only heard/read about skullcandy headphones not being great and I never liked the styling of them myself. Maybe the best advise for the OP is to try them out in a shop if at all possible.

If they are looking for earphones, then I would recommend trying a set of in-ear ones. I was totally against the idea until I got a resent of a pair and now I love them - they block out noise so you don't have to have them up that high at all. The ones I had were Sony but I cant remember them model. They were really comfortable and they had fantastic sounding bass.
Of course, now that OP's question has been answered, this discussion would probably be better suited to the Headphones and Digital Audio Player forum.

    +1 to that.

Skullcandys in ear buds are extremely good value, I own 2 pairs. Paid less than $40 Aus each and the sound quality is on par if not better than the Vibe VModa or Apple in ear buds that I previously owned. Vibe Vmodas are heavily over priced as are the Apple ones.

Skullz all the way from here on out for me!

I know what you mean, if somebody said earphones/buds i'd assume they mean in-ear type.
But I wouldn't make the same assumption for headphones, its just a more general term imo.

No idea about skullcandy but I've always found sennheiser to be a bit ****! Volume is always a bit low, no bass and otherwise never noticed any noticeable difference in quality over other brands. That's trying ones from€30 to €70 quid. They might improve over that price range but I'm not risking my money on them!

Yes, and I was surprised to discover that iPhone headphones will control the volume on your MacBook Pro too :D

Standard headphones will work with an iPhone, but just be ware that you can't use headphones with extra contacts from other brands of phone as they will confuse the iPhone.

E.g. if you connect a set of Samsung Galaxy S headphones, the volume controls on the iPhone / MacBook pro go nuts.

    Sennheiser MM 450 Travel

Wireless bluetooth headset with hands free calling and noise cancelling. I use them every day on the train and imo the money was well spent.

    Cost €150 though...

I use these but in pink http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-EX33LP-BLU-Style-Headphones/dp/B001RB24KK/ref=sr_1_23?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1304691607&sr=1-23 Cheap and cheerful, I think there fairly good quality for what I use them for anyways.

I use the Klipsch Image S4i and find them great. Noise isolating and they come with a mic and inline controls for the iPhone.

anyone who uses stock iphone earphones needs their head examined. might as well thread some lead wire through two 20c pieces.

my sonys could control the volume on my iphone fine. I think they had the made for iphone mark though

I remember having some problems using third party headphones on a 5G iPod, on some occasions the track would randomly stop playing as if the plug was removed. Not sure about the iPhone but I'd want to use Sennheiser PX100s on it rather than the stock Apple earphones.

I own three sets of skullcandy headphones, cracking value.

Go for the full metal jackets, they have a mic, and the button on the mic works for the play/pause/skip functions same as the stock apple ones.
