The 1lb blocks of chalk last years.
The only drawback with the normal chalk is that some gyms do not like it as it is hard to hoover/clean up.

Never tried the liquid chalk but assume it is a bit different but does the job.?

I reckon I have enough to use on my Zimmer frame handles in due course :D

It's the same chalk (dust) suspended in an alcohol gel. You squirt some gel on your hands and rub it in; the gel evaporates (in moments) and you're left with a nice coating of chalk.
It's more expensive on a per-application basis, but it's certainly very convenient.
It's also useful in situations where conventional chalk isn't entirely ideal, outdoors or in the damp/wet, for instance.

Lots of competitive pistol shooters use it, for example:

    liquid chalk is savage.

I'd use normal chalk for heavy DLs and olympic lifts if possible, but liquid's my preference for everything else.

I generally would opt for liquid chalk at the gym. It's much handier to bring in and doesn't get everywhere. But the bag of chalk is awesome for at home, it's generally thicker than the liquid one, so provides a bit more grip.

I switched from using liquid chalk to using a chalk block last summer based on review here, lol.

I wouldn't go back either. I much prefer the chalk block, even if you do need to re apply more often.
