Work part-time or claim the Dole?

I recently found a job in retail. It's not ideal, but it gets me out of bed in the morning.
With the hours I work and the rate they pay per hour, I'd be making the same money as I did on the dole.

If you are/were on the dole, would you stay working, or go back on the scratcher?

Honestly, it's a job. Stop complaining or give it to someone who needs it. Plenty of people here need one.

As my mother says 'When you have a goose, you get a goose'.

Bottom line take the job, nothing is more soul destroying than sitting on your arse while your sleep cycle keeps tilting forward until it doesn't feel abnormal to be awake at 5:30am.

    I see no complaining?

    I see a dilema and a question.

I'd work for the money. Anything to get me out of bed in the morning. I was on the dole for a few months a few years ago and I hated it. Much prefer having a routine in my day.

To be honest, even if the pay was slightly less I'd still take the job, once I could survive off it. I took two weeks off work last summer because I thought I wanted a break from it. I was so bored with not having that or college to go to that I wanted to go back after a week. I don't think I could stick not having a job for any sustained period of time.

If you take the job you could always get overtime or extra hours and it could eventually turn into a full time position.

Don't forget to take into account what the cost of working will be, for example travel to and from work, extra money for clothes, lunches etc... and make sure you will be able to survive on that amount.

    Do both OP.

If you are available for full time work but can only get part time hours, you may be able to claim the dole for the days you don't work.

    Work is over rated.

Its often said that its easier to get a job while in a job and there is merit in this for a number of reasons.
Add to that your gaining experience, your health might be better improved by you being more mobile, etc and you will probably make more friends/contacts which in the end might also be advantageous, you'd be much better getting out of that bed.

Stay in bed, in the long run your losing out more I feel.

Better to have it on your CV.

Biggins makes some good points. Even if it's not great it's still something to do. And you can meet some people and maybe have a bit of craic or whatever. It's always better to be doing something. I'm in a similar position. Full time job and it's useless but it gives me some structure and I make enough to survive. I can't do this **** forever though! I want out. The dole is a worse option, so I stay in my crappy job.

I started a part time job this week and even though its only 8 hours a week it feels great to be working again. I can still claim for 4 days but as I was only €86 a week on the dole, any thing extra is a bonus.

Take the job. As said before its easier to get a job when you have one believe it or not. Just keep banging out cv's left right and centre in the mean time. Good luck whichever option you choose.

Definately take the job. The dole is sole destroying and the lack of a structured routine, social interraction, sense of responsibility, and the feeling of earning your keep cumulatively erode away at your confidence and self worth.
You get more out of a job, well most jobs, than just money.
It could also be a stepping stone for you.
    Good luck OP

Take the job,was on the dole last year and it was soul destroying, staying up all nite and sleeping for most of the day cos there was fúck all else to do.It's good to have a purpose in life even if that purpose is a job you don't really like, its what I have!

I checked this out and I don't qualify for it.

I'm gonna stick it a little while longer anyway and see how it goes. The work is quite tedious and the company aren't the best to work for.

Don't be surprised to see me in the dole queue in a few weeks

No offence to OP but there is something seriously wrong with our unemployment benefit system when we get posts like this on a public forum !
