where to pay tax from income abroad

    Hi there

I might be doing a few jobs for a company abroad over the next few weeks. Just wondering where am I supposed to declare tax for these earnings. Ireland, the country the company is or both?

Also in Ireland do you have to register as a sole trader to declare freelance work or can you declare without having to register?

    Thanks :)

General rule is that unless you are going to be abroad for more than 183 days in a year you will be regarded as resident in Ireland so you pay your tax here on the earnings from the work abroad. If more than 183 days abroad (days leaving Irl and returning are not counted) you could be doubly resident here and abroad. In that case you would have a tax liability abroad and in Irl but you would get credit here for tax paid abroad (assuming we have double taxation agreement with other country).

Regarding freelance work, you will be regarded as self-employed and should register with the tax office dealing with the area/county where you live (not necessarily where the work is done).
