Tubeless tyres not holding pressure?

    Caffelatex FTW!

Have been having issues with some Hutchinson Fusion Tubeless tyres just not holding the 100psi I normally ride them at, typically finding them down to as little as 60psi after just 2-3 days. It started getting old pretty quickly and more so on those days I forgot to check tyre pressures before heading out training....

Ponied up for some Effetto Mariposa Caffe Latex (ended up getting a kit given the price of the stuff and the injector, leaving me with spare valves and rim sealing tape to convert another set of wheels at a later time).

Kit contents are as below - sealant (use just 30ml per road tyre so plenty to go around), injector, 2 valves and alu/rubber washers, a valve key, rim sealing tape (if you're going to do a conversion) and the obligatory stickers that come with almost every cycling product.

So far I'm impressed - no loss of pressure since putting it in (if checking pressure remember **only check when valve hole is at the top as you now have a tyre with latex sealant in it!!**.

I cant speak to it's ability to seal punctures but given how fast any bit that leaks dries up I suspect it will do OK & apparently this can be used as a puncture sealant if injected into in tubular tyres and standard tubes (though this would be an expensive alternative to regular patches and glue for the latter).

Sitting on the fence re. using the rest of the kit; the valves would make useful spares but I'm tempted to see how a ksyrium tubeless conversion works out

Same as the Stans kit for MTB tubeless.
Mind you, one year on, I'm going to have to top up the liquid, as the rear wheel in particular is starting to lose pressure.
Fantastic stuff for puncture protection though, 17 punctures in one wheel one day, and no loss of pressure!
I also have treated my tubulars on the road bike, and apparently it's done by pro teams now, on the likes of the Paris Roubaix....

Thanks Che. I switched to Hutchinson atoms recently. I used Specialised sealant and it wasn't effective. Pressure drops from 7 bar to 3 in 24 hours. I put too much in at First. It said 4 oz on the bottle which I suspect was for mtb. It was pooling and pulling the wheel. I reduced it to about 2 oz of a different brand in the back wheel (threw out the bottle and forget the name). It is holding pressure much better but still losing about 1 bar per day. Thanks for the post-I'll give it a go.

BTW. I'm impressed with tubeless and will be sticking with them.

Meant to ask, where did you buy it (and how much)?

I'm happy with the ride of the tubeless myself - getting em on a wheel can be a PITA but they do roll v.well - advantage over good clinchers (pro3, ultremos etc) is prob small, though the ride does feel different.

Don't forget when fitting tubeless to get the rim & bead wet with soapy water before inflating, it's easy to go 'why bother' but it does help get a better sealed tyre.

Effetto say 30-50ml in a road tyre - I figured given that it foams up during use to go for the lower end of the range and top up to 50 if necessary and so far so good @30ml. Seems to be little enough that there's v. little initial feeling of the wheel being unbalanced when starting off either which is always good too.

I bought from Wiggle (I'm waiting for CRC to man up about their recent issues so sending business elsewhere for a while at least) - the damage was ~50 beans; steepish, but to settle the leaky tyre issue with plenty to spare and other options not so bad on the whole.

Just coming back to this thread to keep it updated - just converted my ksyriums to tubeless (more Fusion 3's).

So far so good - the valve hole in the Ksyriums was a fraction larger than the tubeless valve so required the use of the little rubber donuts (themselves needing to be trimmed to allow the tyre bead to fit) to make a solid seal but they inflated perfectly after that.

Have the tyres seated and inflated to 100psi and going to leave them for a few hours before deflating and shooting some sealant in there. Not going to trial them first day out on the Ring of Kerry but the fit on the rim is visually identical to the tyres on the two way fit Eurus wheelset so cautiously optimistic that the conversion will work well.

Ugh, front wheel - holding pressure perfect, a bit of fun getting the sealant in without it leaking out but otherwise ASAOK.

Rear is being iffy (to say the least as it spits more latex out at me) - the valve is just not sealing well at all. Used caffelatex rim tape to try to overcome it but still not playing ball. Employed the google-fu to see what valves are best reviewed/regarded for Ksyrium conversions - Stans No Tubes 44's seem to be the business so Wiggle will get a few more euro.

Will update again when they arrive and replace the Effetto valves. Hopefully this trial & error will be of some use to the next person to try a Ksyrium conversion.
