I'm going to look at an 04 VW Passat, is there anything about these cars that need special attention, anything I should look out for when checking it over?

I have a mate who around 6 months ago bought a 05 Passat and 3weeks later the Gearbox gave up had to replace it and cost €3,500

I had and 01 1.6 from new as a company car back then. Put 90k miles on it and it was still going strong when i saw it 2 years ago. Didn't have any probs but it was all motorway miles

Ok, its an english import, duty paid, engine rebuild(parts from 05' engine) due to flood, its a trendline 1.9tdi 123000 miles. Is that better squod, I hope thats not too strange a reply for you.

Have one with 65 kilometers on it and no issues, Drove it around the city and the country. VW are reliable cars, had a polo with 96000 miles on it and never had a issue with it!

As a VAG fan, I'd say it's luck of the draw. If you like it, buy it. That is unless you live hand-to-mouth, in which case, it's a bit risky.

There's loads of them on the market and some with good service history so unless it's really cheap ( and there's usually a reason for this) i wouldn't risk my own cash. Do you know anything about the work that was done on it and do you know the seller well.

Dont know the seller. He wants 5700 for it, and gave me a run through of the work done on the engine, it was quite a big overhaul, he did say full engine rebuild!

Flood? Unless its free I'd find somethign else. You dont know what else could be quietly rusting away waiting to fail. Flooded electrics could be a minefield too.

Is 5700 even a decent price for an 04 Passat that hasnt been through a flood?

Drop the attitude please. You gave very little info in your original post and items such as history, mileage and engine would be a deciding factor. There was no need for the rolleyes in your second post.

Water damaged would ring alarm bells for me, It's not as if it is a rare car and there are plenty more. It's also a boggo spec and a little leggy. Sounds expensive too.

We have a ''dreamers'' thread with cars like this. It's mad money for a flood damaged 05 car.

Since the guy selling it is not someone you know and trust just walk away from this one and another strait one will pop up. It's not nice have regrets when it's your money on the line
