    Can anyone help me?
Put a new battery in a car last November to drive it to England to give to my ailing Dad. He could not sort out papers so i have to retrieve it. It is at my sisters over there and battery is not flat from disuse. If we jump it will it charge up enough for journey home. Its a Golf Mk4 1998 Auto 1.6.
    Thanks.

The battery may have been damaged by the bad weather over the winter. If it was fully discharged during the big freeze then it is very likely that that the battery may have frozen and the casing could even be burst.

If ther battery survived the winter, and you can jump start the car then assuming the alternator is charging OK then yes you should be able to get a reasonable charge into the battery by driving it around the local area for an hour or so.

If possible get someone to take a look at the battery before you head over to collect the car, even take it out and put it on a mains trickle charger for a couple of days would be a good idea.

I think you should check what is voltage if it's realy small than you may be forced to buy new one, but if it's close to the regular than hour ride should charge it and everything should be fine, remember about keeping every electric stuff switched off.

Car has slight shudder when starting from cold and power is reduced for first 5 mins until car is warm. Sparks?
