Head Gasket Gone

    Hi guys,

I got my first car about 3 months ago. It's a 2005 Opel Corsa. It was a gift and it was bought off DoneDeal. Anyway the oil was leaking and the engine overheating so brought it to mechanic and he just rang and said the hg is gone. He mentioned something about a timing chain as well. I'll hold my hands up and admit to be completely clueless as to what this all entails  He quoted around 300 euro but just from talking to others at work this seems very cheap? Anyone have anything similiar done and what was the cost?

It's upsetting as I've only had it 3 months and it's my first car and it was a gift from someone special. He feels bad too even though it's no one's fault and these things happen I suppose

    Is it this car?
May 2006 recall to check timing chains of 1.0 litre, 1.2 and 1.4 Twinport engines. Failures thought to be due to dirty oil from 20,000 mile oil changes.

In my experience, a good permenant repair could not be done for €300.

If it has overheated it will need the head pressure tested and skimmed, all new gasket set including chain cover gaskets etc, new head bolts, cooling system and oil system flush etc. Also, special tools are needed to time the engine and set up the cam sensor pick up.

Also, the chain tensioners can give trouble on those engines so if the engine is being stripped down its wise to replace the tensioner too.

If your mechanic says he is doing all the above for €300, then get itemised reciepts from him as an incomplete repair(just fitting a new gasket and nothing else) will simply not last.

€300 is very reasonable to repair a HG on any car, looney cheap if he is replacing the timing chain too.

Always sad to see links to HJ on an enthusiasts board.
