    Hello all,
im buying a car and know dame all about them, iv roughly 8k to play with, had been looking at golf 6 speed tdi's purely because my house mate has a 03 model one, and i drive it a fair bit, never goes under 50 mpg, and at 130000 miles its hasnt given him any bother apart from the usual servicing costs, had looked at bringing in a 2.0l gt tdi from the uk, but just read a review saying the 04-08 2.0l vk engine was one of their worst!?

    il take all advice!

    thanks in advance

What exactly do you want this car for?

sorry i wrote that without even thinking, will be used for at the most a daily commute of 80miles 5 days a week, would prefer a hatchback but willing to listen to the write advice, i ride motorcycles so some power would be nice but again reliability again and fuel economy are what im after..

Could probably get an early enough Octavia VRS Diesel as well, which will give you "some" power and economy.

You'll be stuck with the PD engine and I wouldn't touch a 2 litre one as they give problems with the oil pump, dmf, injectors and from some of the owners forums a bit of turbo trouble too, although this is par for the course with any modern diesel. They will more than likely be high mileage too so the dpf is another worry.

What about a Honda Accord diesel?

Honda accord diesal, wouldnt have problem with it, like i said i have preferences for hatchback but im not into my cars so best car, relibility and fuel economy wise for 8000 will be what i go for..

zzzzzzzzzzzz - Snooze fest. But it's your money. If you want function over form, if you want to blend into the background get a Paddy spec Toyota, Ford, VW etc like to majority of drivers here. Why not get something with a bit more style and pasion about it like the Alfa GT? It might cause you a few headaches but it will be worth it!

I know what your saying, but i would prefer no problems...

You do know you are just as likly to have problems with a VW or a Toyota?
The Alfa diesels have a good rep, and a quick search shows the GT seems to be a reliable car.

If you want good honest abeit bland motoring the Honda Accord diesel is a good bet.

Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI, the 115 bhp version.
Engine is very reliable and it's great on juice.

A friend of mine has one, very low tax of 150 euro great fuel economy does around 50mpg and a nice car to drive, and lovely place to sit feel so spacious on the insdie for a car of its size. But i doubt youd be able to pick one up for 8k and there not that common over here there all uk imports honda never sold the 2.2 I-CTDI Civic in Ireland.

Well theres one 08 one there for under 8 grand, with eh some light damage to the rear:D

Try and get the highest spec you can find, a Zetec or Ghia.
