Anything in particular to watch out for with these?
    Any common expensive issues?
I may be looking at one shortly, Just need to be up to scratch with any issues.
    Cheers

Rust and Rust, check the sills and the rear wheel arches, engines pretty bulletproof. Start from cold take it for a spin and watch in the rear view mirror for blue smoke. Cheap cars to run and engines can be had cheaply but remember RUST. There are not too many cars that rusted as badly as the mk3golf/vento.

Really? Didn't know they were that bad for it, but I have particular experience with them.

Lots of highly rotten ones about in the Uk but over here they're not THAT bad, they do rust a bit alright but that's at least partially due to the fact that they're mostly never cleaned and covered in cow ****e. Grand old cars though have a soft spot for a nice auld diesel jetta or vento myself

    Hmm.
    Thanks for that.
Must check it out with seller

    On another note
    Do earlier ( oo - 02 ) Boras have bmf/dpf ??
Would they be a better option aside the fact of being newer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

None of the boras have a dpf as far as I know.

MG ZR or ZS TD 115 worth a look.
Bora Diesels overpriced cos they're based on the RS4 TDI

That Vento would be a severe bucket of sh1t to drive after a Civic, if he doesn't think it's overpriced from the add he will after a test drive :)

Reason for getting rid of the civic is because they are a magnet for thieves at colleges and he will be driving himself to college this year, Diesel would be a bonus as well ;)

Its brown, slow and the lights look tacky and by god its overpriced by about 1200 quid but each to their own I suppose.

They are bulletproof, but don't go expecting any decent turn of speed, the old TDs only had 75bhp as far as I remember.

That Vent'hoe will stand out like a sore thumb................

I'd go for something like this

Much cheaper, newer, faster and safer with new NCT

A modified old school car would attract the wrong type of attention too.

    Civic should see 35 to 40mpg :)

Stoplock pro on the steering wheel and it won't be robbed unless they bring a spare steering wheel and cutting equipment.

As a city lad I can assure you Civics or similar being robbed from colleges is severely exaggerated.

Anyway, I'd sooner have my Civic robbed than pay anywhere close to €2000 for that heap of sh1t.

A Vento in cows**t green - how apt!
I actually kinda like that, in a kinda "Fiat Multipla" "fair play for driving something so odd" way tho. Either they are really bad pics or the headlamp lenses are tinted - surely one of the most stupid mods ever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,658 ✭✭✭kermitpwee

Something on the lines of a modified vento

A pair of those lights were close to IR£500 years ago

Surely it's like wearing shades at night time? Unless you're Jake or Elwood, you're gonna look a bit stupid? A 75bhp diesel is never gonna be travelling at the kind of speeds that would need spots, but still...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭GTE

If you look at basic spec mark 4 golf/bora or similar vags with 90 or 110 hp you have a faster engine then the TD but just as bullet proof.
that generation have some niggly problems like rear washer pipes but imo nothing that can't be DIYed.
Having said that a realistically priced old vw would be something i wouldn't say no to.

I hear of one a week at the very least been broken into, tried or actually being robbed.

Main things on the newer TDI would be a clogged EGR or the Air flow sensor. If they're anyway minded they'll go for ever!

Indeed, summer 2008 i was living in castletroy (not going to college but was near UL), in the same week i had a pickup truck stolen and a good friend had her corsa stolen, another guy who lived on the same street as me had his car broken into twice, and while i was talking to the gardai about my own truck having been taken they told me 11 vehicles had been reported stolen in that week in that area alone and there had been 20-30 cars vandalised or broken into.

Quite a few people with "target" cars, so either modified cars, unusual car, "fast" ones or old easily broken into stuff have been approached by gardai and advised not to leave them in around elm park or milford grange and not to leave cars parked overnight in the UL carparks

I'm on about cork. do you actually hear of an attempted theft of a civic from a college every week? Seriously like.

    !

so what? I'm pretty sure there are plenty of car thefts and break ins in cork also.
Just giving an example of something local to me. That was an extreme amount in a short period of time, but it was to illustrate that it's well known that certain cars are often targeted, and also around a college there are many young people, many of whom drive old, easily stolen cars and quite a few also drive the likes of civics, glanzas etc, which are all prime targets for theft.
It would be insane to say that something like a honda civic wouldn't be a target for car crime in cork.
From personal experience the driver's side mirror was smashed off a bmw that i had, along with the door being keyed, in cork.

    dirty green leather.... WTF???? horrible!
Grand cars those, but even uglier than a vento, and a trickier task to insure than a vento, even with a few modifications declared on the vento, due the audi having been an "executive car" when it came out. More expensive to repair also, and more faults/problems likely to occur than the vento.

That particular vento in the previous link, id by no means to my taste, and i find the price a bit ridiculous also, but there's nothing wrong with ventos in general. Or with somone wanting to switch from a civic to a vento. they make great solid daily drivers, despite being old. But apparently a car must be brand new and shiny to be acceptable here, and preferably a big petrol engine or i hybrid... because diesel is really bad and evil

Civic being targeted in colleges in cork and civics being targeted in cork are two different things, as I have said a stoplock pro will sort it.a mirror and a keying are not a car theft which was vectras concern. To think they are is insane

In the surrounding areas of the colleges (college housing), yes. In the college car park I often hear of vandalizing but can't say I know of any robberies.

Really? I know it can get clogged but I was always told that our diesel is cleaner then the American stuff is/was. The clogged EGR's are/were very common in the USA but US forums say the European diesel is cleaner by regulation or something and since its a European car the American diesel was an unexpected problem.

Either way for us all the engine needs is a bit of high revving every once and a while and its fine. Motorways at 120kph do that fine.

    EGR1.jpg
    USA somewhere.

    Mine has always been fine.

Mine over 200k miles of motorway driving and it was clogged worse than that! I literally picked it out with a screwdriver

Egr will clog in anything, that's one of the reasons folk blank them off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭GTE

I wonder what is causing that and why mine is so clear. Its been checked every 10,000 miles since 150k by me and ill be doing the third check next week when I service it, I hope its not a "yet" situation. It could have been cleaned in the past so what kind of time frame are we looking at here for build up?

Some people who do EGR deletes say if its not the fuel causing the extra build up, its the turbo beginning to weep oil.

Very interesting none the less. I look forward to checking it again.
