does protein = weight loss

    just wondering if i have a large protein diet and cut down on carbs will that help with weight loss?
    Ive started cycling the last few months everyday i dont go to gym or like weights im 6ft and stocky and have lost a stone already without really changeing diet getting harder to lose the pounds now if i cut out spuds and pasta which i would have most days and bread which i have everyday and replace with protein maybe protein shakes would it help
    i was 15 1/2 stone now 14 1/2 would like to get down to 13 stone thanks;)

    Probably better to replace the carbs with good quality fats imo. Assuming your getting adequate protein (say 1g/lb lean bw roughly) then I think it would be much better to make up the deficit through fats. A high-fat/ adequate-protein/ low-carb approach seems to work for most people looking to lose bodyfat, assuming of course that you are running on a calorie deficit.

    how do i know how much calories i burn when cycling and would i just calculate my calorie intake of food over a week
    if average male calorie intake should be 3000 cal and that was mine and if i burned 500cal per day cycling would that be a def of 500 cal per day then:confused: god i havent a clue:D

    A high fat diet with ample protein (.5 to 1g per lean lb of bodyweight) and limited carbs is most effective in my experience.

    In many natural foods, protein and fat go hand in hand - think seeds, flax, beef, pork, lamb, milk, eggs. So a high protein diet is almost always high fat too; and since you can only metabolise around 30g of protein per meal, you're better of focusing on good quality fats IMO.

    is it just a matter of cutting out or down on carbs if i stuck to fruit veg dairy and lean meat and fish and maybe weetabix and porridge in mornings would that type of diet help with weight loss
    sorry if these questions are silly its just that i aint got a clue when it comes to what types of foods to eat or not for weight loss:confused:

    also is a high protein low carb diet healthy or would some carbs be reccomended??

    That's basically good but personally I would eliminate the weetabix and porridge. They're not the worst, but you'd be better off having a flax/seed cereal with two eggs and a slice or two of ham in my opinion.

    Low carb is healthy, but you need to eat a huge amount of vegetables and plenty of fruit such as berries, apples, and pears. While these do contain carbs, they don't have much calories, are rich in fibre, and high in essential vitamins and minerals. Drizzle butter over your veg if you like to make them more palatable. Also, get away from the concept of high protein... think more in terms of high fat, ample protein, low carb.

    Egg based breakfasts are excellent. Include a pint of water and maybe some fish oil and you're all set.

    Higher protein does tend to reduce calorie intake, but the effect is temporary. It stops after around 6 months.
