If you have the log book you can tax the car - don't know why you're expecting a notification to tax it, you already know it's out.

Go tax it tomorrow, then you wont have to worry about being stopped.

i would expect it's the responsibility of the motor tax office to notify the owner of the car when there tax is due for renewal - that's the way it's always worked for my last 3 cars.

I get what he/she means, he wonders whether a form will arrive with a pin whereby he can tax online without a paper trail as you might expect in a knowledge economy OR does he have to take time off work and go and queue old style and waste everybodys time doing.

The alternative to both is to download an R100a form??? and print it off, fill it out, send it off and wait a week or two and the disc should drop in through yon letterbox.

thanks JMSE - yeah i do all my stuff online now - normally get notification with a pin - go online sorted

right now - i cant take time off work (not gonna queue for an hour to pay a motor tax bill either) and if i do what u suggest download form send of wait 2 weeks - how do i explain that to our friendly boys in blue when i get stopped.....

You shouldn't be driving the car untaxed. Simple as. No explaining to do, so if you get fined - man up and pay it.

When cars change ownership you have to do the first tax manually - after that the pin gets sent out for renewal.

+1 Just tax it in person, it's all over then.

You don't need to present the registration docs but you do need certain details about the car so it's handy to have the reg docs or insurance cert to hand in case you need to check the car's details.

Even if you received a renewal notice in the morning it'll likely be early next week before you receive the tax disc so you'll be driving around for almost 2 weeks without a disc. It's your responsibility to make sure the car is taxed, so "Sorry Garda, didn't get the notice" won't wash if you leave it too long. I think you already know this ;).

PS : can you get someone else to go to the tax office for you?

Some of the advice here is OTT. If you 'tax or die' people would just think for a minute... your normal tax renewal certificate which you receive by post from the local MOTOR TAX OFFICE offers you the opportunity to renew by the end of the month following disc expiry. No member of An Garda Siochana is going to be bothered by the non-dilemna the OP is in.

i'm just going to ring the office in the morning and check my options - i will also call to my local garda station to get there official take on same.

    thanks for the help.

The 1 month period is only to allow you pay the tax without incurring arrears which are charged at 112% of the normal rate. You are not legally allowed to have the car on the road without tax during that time!

While you're likely to get away for a while by bluffing a Garda, you're far less likely to get away with it if a Traffic Warden eyes your un-taxed car parked in the street ;) Don't forget he probably works for the very same council you owe the tax to.

Good points slim I have to admit. While I myself have zero weekly/monthly/6monthly parkings in wardened zones, maybe the OP has. But on the 1 month period, the renewal cert is fairly reassuring in its text when it says you can re-tax either 'prior to or during [month following expiry]' , I wouldnt call it bluffing a Garda, they WILL give you grace.

Let us know what they say, so we know what the best option is for the next time it's asked!

    Cheers.
