British PM Wants to Ban Gay TV Kisses

British prime minister David Cameron supports a ban on same-sex kisses on television outside late-night "adult" viewing hours.

British prime minister David Cameron wants to restrict same-sex kisses on television to late-night adult viewing hours.

The Sun reports that Cameron, the Conservative leader who attended the royal wedding last week, supports a ban on same-sex kisses during the “pre-watershed” viewing hours before 9 p.m. An independent review may recommend the restriction.
Brooke Vincent, who plays lesbian Sophie Webster on the soap opera Coronation Street, took to Twitter to accuse Cameron of not supporting equality.
According to The Sun, the 18-year-old actress tweeted, "I swear David Cameron's meant to be supporting equal rights. I just think if same-sex kisses are what he is prioritising and concentrating on changing, our country's in trouble."

I think its not exaggerating to say it would be terrible if this happened.

This would have a major knock-on effect for us with most of the country recieving BBC, UTV and CH4. Plus programmes like Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Eastenders... and Skins, shameless, etc. Those growing up gay will lose out on exposure to "normal" gay relationships on TV...

I pay my TV licence, I don't want to see straight people kissing! Eew. Think of all the baby-gays that will be corrupted and turn out straight. Those people and their hetrosexual agenda. :pac: (This resembles a comment I saw on the Daily Mail article about the story that I've modified for my own amusement.)

Nah, on a serious note I don't think Cameron will get away with this, no matter the outcomes of the review. It would cause outrage and is clearly discriminatory. I do question the motives of a goverment, however, that commission a religious group called Mother's Union (?!) to conduct a "independent" review. Because that's not going to be biased at all.

Tbh, I'd have to ban myself if I gave my honest opinion of David Cameron here.

Needless to say, this is absolutely idiotic.

Can we ban David Cameron from TV?

David Cameron and the conservative party represent everything wrong with the UK. Any form of censorship is wrong, particularly homophobic nonsense like this. Its quite common for the Tories to try outdo the BNP or EDL to appeal to their right wing base and this is probably a case of this too.

Whenever I hear things like this I just picture myself telling the great-great-great grandchildren about down the line and their jaws hitting the floor.

I'm shocked to think the Sun could print a story which was not 100% accurate. Why does anyone take this gutter press seriously, when the story is obviously made up and untrue?

This would affect straight sex scenes just as much, I bet you can't find any news
report that says it only affects gays.

It's a proposed ban on sex scenes before the watershed that has been brought about by certain lesbian sex scenes on corrie but it will apply to straight sex also.

Corrie only have themselves to blame if this gets enacted as they were clearly attention seeking.

If you're letting your kids watch the horrible stuff in Corrie, you surely can't turn around and complain about a sex scene...?

Forget banning sex scenes, just ban Eastenders, Corrie, etc for soaking up air time that could be used for entertaining programming. Shameless is still good though, we can keep that :D

Unfortunately It seems to be targeted at LGBT kisses...

Pinknews and a variety of other sources quote one of the concerned mothers referencing the Brookside kiss...
    Pinknews
A source close to the inquiry told the Daily Mail: “It is hard to protect children in the internet and mobile-phone age but we have to do something. For some parents, what has been considered acceptable in the past – such as that Brookside kiss – is not appropriate for children to see early in the evening.”

This is likely to be the controversial lesbian kiss which aired on Brookside in 1994 (second paragraph). Unsurprisingly the two actors involved had been seen to be "non sexually" affectionate in two previous episodes, but once their kiss became obviously romantic there was a barage of complaints, some stating the show should be taken off the air.

A quote from a concerned mother isn't proof of anything. Find me
Something that suggests the ban would only affect glbt scenes.

No proof as yet, but enough reason to be concerned. Its a concerned mother... close to the source of the inquiry... which is being run by the Mothers Union...

The Mothers Union (from their Irish website):
Mothers' Union is an international Christian charity that seeks to support families of all faiths and none through practical outreach, prayer and advocating family friendly policies within both government and public life. By supporting marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity, we tackle the most urgent needs challenging relationships and communities.

We don't know what this review will reccomend - in fact it seems quite a broad review

I think the sun picked up on something on twitter and blew it out of all proportion - very lazy journalism altogether

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It's not a concerned mother - It's the CEO of an organisation carrying out an independent review independently of the organisation for the dept of education. The mothers union is not running the enquiry - The Dept of Education is and their CEO is chairing it!

In a way it's not great that it might be quite biased if Reg Bailey as an independent chair specifically brings his professional outlook gleaned from the Mothers Union.

I'm really wondering why people are jumping up and down about this at the moment though.

What has happened is that a soap star has tweeted about something that may be proposed by a review group that hasn't yet reported, and this proposal hasn't been seen, yet alone considered, by the Dept of Education.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me?
