Rest between gym sessions

    How long should you rest before going to the gym?

    For example is it ok to go to the gym every weekday?

    My routine is 30 mins cardio (bike, rower & cross trainer) and 30 mins machine weights.
    I have been doing this for the last 3 months.

    My thoughts on this is you need at least a day's rest between resistance (weights) day's. I train with weights Mon, Wed and Fri. Sometimes if I feel that am over training and take an extra day's rest mid week. Cardio in between weights days is fine though. But the bottom line is that you need to rest in order to grow/get stronger. There is no point stressing your muscles again before they have over compensated from the previous training session. The formula I think is quite simple

    1. work out with high intensity for a brief period (50 mins or less)
    2. Feed the body with nutrients to help it recover and grow
    3. Give the body enough time to over compensate and adapt to the strain you put it under during the workout
    4. When your body adapts to a particular workout/routing, change it. This is sometimes difficult, especially if you have seen good results. But results will diminish... so a change is the bet way to get more good results


    Over training is probably the biggest killer of results/gains in people training with weights.

    EDIT>> I just seen that you are doing machine weights... probably not putting enough strain on the body to require alot of recovery. Going to the gym every day and doing a moderate machine weights session may be okay.
