    Hi everyone,

Yesterday I rooted my Desire with Unrevoked and installed the clockworkmod. I'm looking to put a new rom on it today, one with app2sd+ and preferably Gingerbread, but if Froyo were more stable I'd be happier with that. Do I need to do anything special for the app2sd+ part? Thanks for your help

Do you want to stick with a HTC Sense based ROM or go stock to a modified Android version?
Do you need Friend Stream, Sense Clock, Calendar?

You need to partition your SD card to add an EXT3 partition to use A2SD. Depending on the version of ClockWorkMod you installed, this can be done from the Recovery Menu.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭griffdaddy

I don't really mind about the Sense UI, if it's just as easy to leave it in I'd rather leave it in, but if there's a better rom where it's not included, I'd go with that. I used the clockworkmod that comes automatically with unrevoked at the moment, so I presume it has the ability to partition. Should i just back up my sd and then format the card and partition it?

You need to upgrade your ClockWorkMod as the one with Unrevoked doesn't have that feature.
I'm using 2.5.1.8 and it has the partition feature available.
You need to flash it in recovery and reboot.
    Get the file here:
    http://www.multiupload.com/JB1B50GTU0

Either you stick with a Sense based ROM, ala LeeDroid or forgot about all those features and go for a stock Android ROM like CyanogenMod 7 or OxygeN 2.

Thanks for your help. How do I flash that new Clockworkmod? Can I run unrevoked and select custom Clockworkmod or do I have to do it on the phone through the recovery menu?

I had been running Oxygen, found it unstable and buggy (had to restart phone maybe once every 2 days).

Switched to Cyanogen Mod, solid as a rock, and it seems (although I can't verify this for definite) to be faster.

One thing to say is that you will probably miss some of the sheen & gloss of sense, but once you get used to it, vanilla (or as close to it as possible) android ftw. :pac:

Sorry to hijack this tread I was thinking of rooting my desire as well due to lack of space for apps. I will be upgrading the sd card from 4GB to 16GB.
Will a class 2 SD card be okay for A2SD+ or do I need upgrade to a class 4.

ok guys, i just installed Cyanogen 7 and it's past the HTC boot screen and at the screen with the blue android guy on a skate board. It's already been on this screen for about 5 minutes, should i just keep waiting or what?

Sorry for the kinda silly question, but what is the actual difference between a Sense and non-Sense rom? I run LeeDroid and have stuck with it cause some others don;t have sense, but what actually is the difference? Ongarite mentioned Friend Stream & Sense Clock which I do not need - but Calendar? Any other differences? I thought there was a difference in the dialer and contacts, like the facebook integration which I like..
    Thanks

Sense is HTC's custom ROM. Everything from the launcher, settings, UI, widgets & certain apps are HTC designed. HTC apps would be SENSE clock, agenda calendar, peep, friendstream, app share, custom browser & music player.

Stock android has completely different, all apps are the google versions or cyanogenmod variations.

A quick way to check what a non HTC ROM would be like, is to download a new launcher like ADW, Launcher Pro or Go Launcher EX.
The widgets will be stock versions, app drawer will be different & you can rename, hide or change app icons, docks...

Well with LauncherPro Plus, you get all the Sense widgets anyway.

Ok running CM7 finally, was trying to put Leedroid 3 with app2sd+ on for ages but then decided this was easiest. I've created an ext3 partition on the sd and I'm using a program called s2e from the market that seems to be brilliant for moving stuff over to the external storage. I think my storage problems are finally finished! The menus absolutely nip around as well, although i'm not sure if that's Gingerbread or Cyanogen?

Hi griffdaddy, How did you creat ext3 partition and did you use class 2 sd card?

Hey MJPE, there seems to be a lot of conflicting reports of A2SD perfermance with class 2 cards. Maybe just give it a try and see what you think yourself?

How much more space do you need for apps? I dont use A2SD, instead i repartitioned the internal memory so i have 250MB instead of 150. You need S-OFF but you already have it, right? He sets cache to 5MB but if you play any games you'd want to set that to 25 or 30

/edit/ Also remember that ROMS come slightly compressed so when you load them onto your phone they take up more space than the zip file size

Hi All I am running Leedroid 2.3d with A2SD+ at the mo and looking to upgrade to the Leedroid Gingerbread Rom. I have downloaded the files which are the rom the radio and a patch(is this needed anyone else running Leedroid gingerbread rom?). I am wondering do I install the patch after I install the new Rom? Also should the new radio be flashed before or after flashing the rom? Is flashing a radio and the patch the same as you do for the Rom?
Will I keep the A2SD+ with the new Gingerbread rom? Sorry for all the questions had problems the last time did this want to try avoid this time!
    Thanks in advance.

HI, I switched to LeeDroid 3.0 from 2.3d soon as it came out. There's a lot of confusion on the thread over there!
One thing I'm not certain about is the patch, there are two patches one is a market fix and one is the ext 3 alignment fix.

I think the market fix is now aligned into the latest 3.05 ROM.

The ext 3 alignment one, can't remember for sure if I did this or not. I don't think I did though.

What worked for me was this:
    1. Check your version of HBOOT. Reboot into recovery and it'll be at the top of screen. Check if you are S-Off or S-On.
    2. Use Alpha Rev to get to S-OFF and HBOOT 0.93.
    3. You then need to change the partition table, it's on alpharev site. Get the one at top of the list called bravo stock I think.
    4. Without booting, flash the rom, flash the radio and reboot. Takes 10 minutes.

It's early days on this ROM, I wouldn't recommend it yet if you have lots of apps.

I kept running out of space on internal memory and gmail/market stopped working.
The apps didn't self install to the ext partition at all for some reason, seems to be a problem with it.

I had thought, maybe I didn't flash the ext 3 alignment fix so I started again and used the patch this time and got stuck in a bootloop, had to pull battery and go into recovery and repartition the SD card in recovery to get past boot up.
I had to manually use titanium back up to move apps to the SD card which took a while and was a pain.

If you can manage to set it up it works pretty ok. Battery is good, it's fast, the GB keyboard is great with full functionality.

When your done Flash needs to be uninstalled with titanium then reinstalled from market - otherwise flash doesn't work in browser.

Oh yeah don't forget to do a wipe of the memory before you start.
I'd also recommend buying titanium back up pro to run proper batch operations and I'd back up the SD card too just in case. I didn't but thankfully non partition data was still there after repartitioning. Do a nandroid back up also.

If you do it and get stuck post here and I'll try help.

Hi Keith Thanks for the info I think I might leave it for awhile given what you mentioned. I dont really fancy having to change hboot and stuff and do S Off if I dont have to. Im very happy with 2.3d no problems so Ill wait for a finished version I think. Will changing hboot and S Off and changing boot partition be needed for the finished version you think(seems like lot of hassle!) and do you need to do much the same for other gb roms? Any others you have used you recommend?
    Thanks

I decided to give leedroid a go last night because i actually do miss sense and activated s-off, partitioned the sd card in ext3 with clockworkmod and installed the ext3 patch then flashed the rom. It says welcome to leedroid 3.0 in clockworkmod, but then when i reboot it just stalls at the 'why so serious?' screen from alpharev. Anyone got any ideas?

Didnt see radio mentioned did u flash that too?

That happened me too and I think it was because of the ext 3 alignment zip.

I'd repartition, flash rom and radio again and dont do ext 3 zip.

    Worked for me.

    Hi Gav.
Not 100% sure if you won't have to s-off and stuff when its the final version. I think you probably will have to at least until the official build is leaked, may change then. Keep an eye on his xda thread.

Same boot loop problem for me due to running the alignment which seemed to corrupt the partition - fixed by minitools partition wizard. I'm also getting the disappearing internal memory which I didn't get with the modacco rom but I like this new Leedroid especially the tv-off effect when powering down.

Thanks for the hint on flash - I didn't even realize it was missing :D

They are not comparable, Cyanogen is a mod developer, his mod is called CyanogenMod.. Gingerbread is a version of Android. The current CyanogenMod for the Desire is using the Gingerbread version of Android. There is currently no available Gingerbread mods with Sense available for the Desire but probably will be soon.

After lots of fiddling I finally got Ledroid 3.0.5 going, much prefer it to cm7. I had to mess around with partitions for ages and didn't flash the alignment zip in the end. Should there be an app2sd+ app in the app drawer or is it built into android 'move to phone' option? There's no app2sd app amongst my apps.

Yeah I know, i just left out the word mod. I meant that i didn't know if it was gingerbread alone that was so much faster than my previously installed froyo, or if the cm7 had it going so fast. I have leedroid with sense installed now, pretty pleased with it.

Check your internal memory and see what it is. AFAIK I know the rom should place data in your partition automatically. If not and you are low on space then use titanium back up to move apps to the SD card.

I had to do this as the rom didn't do.it like it used to in 2.3d.

Its a pretty good rom once you get it going. Few small bugs like flash not working outta the box and apps not going to the partition but other than that its great.

Does anyone know what the best rom is for battery life? I'm really getting sick and tired of my Desire dying on me when i really need it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭griffdaddy

Are you using Juicedefender Ultimate Zascar? It's on the market and dramatically increases battery life by managing data connections etc. Makes a massive difference in prolonging the battery life

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,781 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

I used to use it, but it really annoyed me - it turns the data on for 1 minute every 15 minutess which is cool, but if I want to use internet etc in the meantime its a pain in the ass - not sure if it was just me but you had to fiddle with it for ages and disable JD to get the data back on again. How is it for you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭griffdaddy

Never had any problems with it, they added plenty of features over the last few updates as well. Did you have it set to enable data when the screen turns on or when you unlock the phone? The location based WiFi toggle is really handy as well. Give it another whirl, it's massively saving my battery

I had JD free version I didn't think it was great. I'd usually turn off wifi if I was leaving the house for a good while or anything so didn't get much benefit but found it annoying like zascar.

I find mobile internet wastes my battery most especially when in low reception area. Suppose you could then off internet if your not gonna be using it for a while. If you still wanna get email etc keep your internet connection on 2g should last longer.

Installed the newest version Yesterday. Ok wow, it really has changed significantly since I used it last. Does not give the same problem with data as it only switches it off when the phone is locked. I bought the ultimate version on the Android market and there are loads of options, much easier to use now too. Usually my phone only lasts me a day, if that – but as an experiment I did not charge it last night, and I still have 25% left – I wonder will it stretch until tonight!

Thanks for the recommendation this will make a huge difference to me!

Hi If want to install Gingervillian after Leedroid 2.3d do I need to change the radio? I have not changed it at all ever still the same as out of the box. I dont see it mentioned on the xda thread so im guessing I dont need to change it? Also will I have to move the dalvik cache to the sd card after flashing the rom and will I wipe the sd card moving the cache?
Am I right in thinking Gingervillian is alot further along dev wise than Leedroid Gingerbread rom? I dont see it mentioned changing boot partions, radios or needing patches for Gingervillian which was what put me off Leedroid GB rom.Im really looking to just have to install rom from zip file in recovery like I did with 2.3d and not need to go changing lots other stuff!
    Thanks
    Gavman
