I moved to a gealtacht village from new york in 2000, I couldnt read or write a word of irish but the irish teacher at school expected me to be able to do the same work as everybody else in the class, She often made a show of me in front of the class and mimicd my american accent. I dont think its right our tax money funding these people.

People living in Gaeltacht areas pay taxes and have rights too. Just because you dident like your teacher does not mean you can punish the entire gaeltacht population:rolleyes:

Also was it only your Irish teacher that was like that? Every other subject in a Gaeltacht school is taught through Irish as well. Did they not expect you to keep up with the rest of the class?

How old were you when you first went to a gaeltacht school anyway?

But because Gaeltachts are primarily in rural areas then they are almost certainly net recipients of tax revenue rather then being net contributors.

I'd question your parents logic in moving you to an Gaeltacht school if you can't speak Irish. It would be like moving to France although you're unable to speak French.

Several posts so far all blaming the OP
who as a child could not have had influence over her parents decisionmaking process,
and more importantly was bullied per own account.

Am I the only one who thinks that was ****ty thing to do by the teacher?

    Because it's taxpayers money.

The reason my parents sent me to the gealtacht school was because the nearest other school was 20km away. I couldnt think of what other fourm to put it, mods are free to move it.

Of course it was, There is no doubt about it other than the teacher was wrong, and if there was evidence of their doing this on a continuing basis with other students then they should be removed from their job.

However demanding that funding be removed from all gaeltacht schools simply because of a bad experience with one teacher is simply absurd.

20km? What gaeltacht were you in? I would be massively surprised if there is any school in the country 20km away from the next.

Why did your parents move to a gaeltacht if they had no Irish?

There's no way that the opening post meets the standard required for a Politics thread. I suggest that you should have complained to the department of education, or at least your parents, if you were mocked by a school teacher eleven years ago. It's not necessarily too late to do so - consider sending a letter to the department of education.

Either way, it's not a basis for a general funding discussion. I can offer sympathy (and I do) but I'm afraid it still doesn't belong here. Try the personal issues forum if it's still an issue that affects you.
