Snowdonia Charity Challenge

Hello - first time poster on cycling forum!!

My brothers and I have decided (somewhat foolishly) to take part in the snowdonia charity challenge this July. It consists of a 40mile cycle, climb mount snowden and canoe for approx 40 mins.

The cycling is broken up as follows
    20 mile
    climb
    10 mile
    conoe
    10 mile

The last 10 mile is 'off road' and very steep apparently. Ive started training a few weeks ago when the rugby season all but ended. But i dont know if im doing the right sort of training.

We are just determined to get round the route and arent too fussed about setting brilliant times - just want to be able to complete it.

So far the plan is 2 cycles on the road a week and 1 spin class a week. - is that reasonable. The road cycles are about 10 mile and are taking me about an hour - I live in the drumlins of monaghan which i assume will be quite like the terrain in snowden so I assume that is a good thing.

So any tips would be appreciated? Has anyone done this sort of challenge?

Also am i mad to do it in a mountain bike (the organisers reccommend a hybrid bike)

Is the off-road bit on the bike or walking? You'll need a mountain bike if it's by bike

I'm presuming you'll be going up Lamberris pass? I've done that on a mountain bike, and a really sh1t one at that. It's a tough climb but if you are any way fit you'll manage it. And coming back down is a real buzz!! It's much bigger than anything in Monaghan though. :D

I don't know the terrain you are riding on at the moment but if you can work up to say three hours on the bike in one stretch I reckon you'll be fine.

thanks for reply - the offroad bit is on the bike but its more of a stone path from what I've been told.

Can I maybe get a bit of advice regarding the best way to attack hills? At the moment I'm staying in a midrange gear constantly (2&4 out of an 18 gears) and trying to get momentum going up hill....and then stand up when I need too..

Is this the wrong approach should I be going in a higher gear and trying not to stand up?

Thanks in advance - as you can guess - I'm quite the novice!!
