I feel like a failure

Sometimes I just wanna get angry with myself and even with my parents. I worked hard at school - got reasonable results, worked hard at college - got a degree, but I haven't done anything with it and it's so SOUL-destroying knowing that I have worked to get results for so long and it now seems that it was a waste of time :(. I found I couldn't get work from my degree so I ended up working with one of my parents. Now after they spent so much money to get me educated I feel guilty that I didn't do more to find my own job. I was unable to do a masters. I know if I can get some programming experience, I might find employment. Of course, I might have to try somewhere abroad. My parents haven't really encouraged me to get out there and try to be successful. Should I blame them? I feel like life has grinded to a halt.

Noooo, dont blame your parents! It seems nice that they put you through college, are giving you paid employment and being easygoing. The labour market's tough so it would be more unfair of them if they had unrealistic expectations, or if they criticised you.

And don't blame yourself just yet either. You're still young and as I said, there just aren't enough jobs for everyone. It's good you know how to work hard (evidenced by your exam results)... but there's a lot more to life than some college exams.

I think a better lesson in life is to learn how to take things as they come without being too hard on yourself or blaming other people when things don't work out as you planned.

Head over to the work and jobs forum (or one of the many online programming forums) for advice on getting work experience in programming.

A year abroad could also be beneficial from a personal development point of view.
