I thought we all agreed it was,
    .5(Your age)+7

e.g. For me it would be .5(24)+7=19

    That doesn't help if you're 16.

    It does.
    16(.5)=8+7=15 Simples
    It works

Erm, using that formula as a defense will not keep you off the sex offenders register

We should reform every single law relating to sex in this country. Especially the statutory rape law.

It won't?!?.... [runs off to burn the evidence].

... Anyway, why would we need to reform the age of consent, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it from where I am standing.

If a 15 year old boy and 16 year old girl have sex, guess who gets put on the sex offender register should the parents decide to press charges.

That's why we need to bring it in as part of the law. I want to see 50 years old locked up for banging 30year olds. It happends, and it's actually a good point.

Yes, it should. In particular, if they're going to punish young males under 16 for having sex and not punish young females under 16, even where the sex was consensual, there should be a national ad campaign encouraging young ladies to give handjobs, blowjobs and allow anal, since the young male is going to jail if they have vaginal sex.

Neither, as of yet no conviction has ever been made when both parties were under age and within two years of each other, and the way the laws are worded there probably never will be unless its changed.

    your age - your age + 18

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The person under-age is never punished its the adult that is punished.

It's a stupid feckin law, the parents of the boy should be able to bring counter charges. If there was equality on this issue, not a single such case would ever come to court.

If a heterosexual, under the age of consent couple engage in vaginal sex, the male will face punishment, not the female. If they only engage in anal, oral, or otherwise, the law punishes them equally or not at all.

I know, it's a sexy thought. Hopefully by the time they're legal for me, they'll have learned enough to give a proper blowjob.

There should be a 2 year rule, I've been told before that there was if both were under 17 but I guess I've been wrong. I'm gonna be locked up so :pac:

Well maybe thats 'cause the law is there because those writing the law didn't think 15 and 16 years olds should be having sex... I don't agree with that opinion; but hey, doesn't bother me as it doesn't apply to me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,072 ✭✭✭PeterIanStaker

We need responsible sex education in schools, with emphasis on contraception, responsible behaviour and STD prevention, but that wont happen because the Fascists from Rome still control the schools.

The law does not apply to me either but it does bother me.

I know I messed about before I was legal but 1) I never told my parents and 2) if I had, they would never have been so vindictive to go and ruin the life of a boy who was only doing what I wanted him to do.

Fair 'nough. To be quite frank however, I feel that no matter what way you change the laws the same people will find ways of using those laws to harm others just as they do so now. I am not saying you shouldn't try ad change the laws, I am just saying; Were I to put effort into changing things I would try and change the people, not the piece of paper that tries to tell people what to do and what not to do.

Needless to say. Age of consent doesn't need to be changed in any way

There should be absolute equality in all aspects of criminal law. The idea that in this day and age, your gender can affect whether your actions are illegal or not is sickening.

You never hear the feminists complaining about this one, do you? It's either wrong for everyone or for no one. NO double standards should exist in the legal system. None.

Its 17 in Ireland (the highest in europe) Is it time lower it to maybe 14 or 15 ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭ItsAWindUp

16 I reckon it should be.

It absolutely needs to have the blatant sexism removed from it anyway. Two underage teenagers of the same age have sex, the guy is a "rapist", the girl is a "victim".

It's so ridiculously sick I don't even know where to start. Equality 2k11, it would seem :(

think 17 is fine if one of the 2 is 18 or over but it the couple are both under 17 then it could be lower to 15 or something

Surely this young innocent thread should not be allowed merge with that older thread? Wait, does half of May + 7 = >/= October?.

I think 16 is a reasonable age for consent but the law needs to be ammended to include some degree of common sense to prosecute a 16 year old for having sex with a 15 year old is not only ridiculous but wrong what if that 16 year old had abitions of becoming a teacher, or care worker thsi si something they may never be able to do as they would be a registered sex offender its crazy.

Furthermore it does need to be considered that sometimes teenagers are capable of consenting to people not only their own age but much older than them, at 16 i consented to sex with a 27 year old man the legal age at the time was 17 we broke up, i was bitter i could have brought charges and ruined his life if i wanted to, luckily for him I didnt.

At the moment there is no common sense in the law this needs to be addressed

The age of consent in Ireland is 17, not 16 which everyone thinks it is.

But isn't there a grey area where if you're a male over the age of 18 then the age of consent is 18 whereas with a female it doesn't change?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,754 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

When you say reform the age of consent - bearing in mind it's there to protect innocent chidren who don't theoretically know enough about sex to consent or participate - ar you thinking of reforming it down or up?

Well in Spain it's 14 to have sex, 14 to drive a scooter. 16 to drink and 16 to drive and I find the children over there are a lot more responsible than they are in Ireland.
