Interview when pregnant

I have an interview tomorrow with public service body & am very obviously pregnant. Its a job I'd really love & consider myself qualified for, but am realistic about the outcome given the timing.

While I am not expecting them to take me on I want to go to the interview and make a good impression, should any vacancies come up in the future.

I just want some idea of what they can ask about my being pregnant so I can be prepared with answers.

I'm concerned the interviewers might be annoyed & hostile - that is, they might think that I am wasting their time & make that clear to me.

I bet you'll they be the opposite! Gentle and kind.

I agree it is likely they won't give you the job, but if you come across really well you never know... you may get a sympathetic female interviewer.

Its illegal for them not to give you the job just because you are pregnant [just as they cant give you the job because you are a woman].

Now if i was the other side of the table, I would be nice as pie, and give you a fair interview, but at the same time I would try hard and find another suitably qualified candidate.

Im sure you understand that it would be annoying for them, to fill a vacant role, only for that new hire to have to go away on maternity leave almost instantly. So they have to fill it again [with a temp, or whatever].

But it is much the same as hiring any woman below 50 is it not? Give or take a few months. I could start a new job today and fall pregnant tomorrow. Or already be in the beginnings of pregnancy and not know it.

Definitely cannot be mentioned or alluded to in any way shape or form..
However as mentioned above they will probably try find a better candidate within the pool..

Interestingly they will need a woman to interview you and this should ensure you are given a fair hearing... I'm 95% sure that two men can't interview a woman or maybe I'm mixing that up with internal policy from my last job..

Don't be tempted to mention the pregnancy yourself, an IBEC barrister told me that once you open the conversation yourself they can continue with it and legally ask questions.

Sounds like the paranoid internal policy from your previous job. :)

Well the interview went really well - they didnt mention it but I did.

They asked about my availabilty and I felt I had to be honest. They were perfectly pleasant about it and said something to the effect of 'if you come out on top of the pile we will work something out'.

I still don't think they will give me the job, and at this stage in pregnancy it wouldnt be ideal as it will be a 2 hour round commute & I am already finding my current position a struggle.

However, I hope I just made a good impression so that if something comes up again there I will have a good chance.
