What's the justification of drinks being so expensive in The Dragon?

You've given, like, nothing to work with for this thread. Drinks in most gay places are expensive, hence the phrase "gay tax".

How much is a drink nowadays?

Soo happy I live in a country where drinks are around €2. Moving back to Ireland next week and dreading it!

Pints in Dragon are easily around and above €6

But you know, looks like the gaybourhood doesn't know that there's a recession out there and the gaybours are happy to pay those ridiculous prices and be absolutely fab with their cocktails and shots...

Imagine asking in The Dragon for a Dutch Gold :D You'd be kicked out of the place at the same speed as a teenage girl running to a Justin Bieber gig.

We are queer, we pay expensive beers!

generally most bars will charge whatever they can get away with - many a pint in the city was 5-6 until about 2/3 years ago when people stopped going out so much due to the recession (maybe the smoking ban played a part)

and i guess theyre still dear in gay bars as there arent that many gay bars to chose from and plenty of people favour drinking at a gay bar i guess. so they get away with the charges.

never heard the term gay tax before. I think there's a perception that most gay people don't have children so they can spend more and we are all rich - even look at GCN - its become so commercialized and no other content of note

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I have vague memories of getting my drink on with 2eur tequila in there not too long ago! I suppose it depends what night you go?

If the English queen drinks expensive liquors, by extension, all other queens should too.

Billions for the bankers and nothing for the gays.

Anyway, the justification is free market economics. I've never paid 6 euro for a pint in the dragon.

Was it busy the night you were there? Well that's all the justification they need! The Dragon is trading in receivership so I'm sure they are going to try maximize their profits to the nth degree!

No body but no body looks fab with a Dragon Cocktail. They use spray can whipped cream as a main ingredient in Pina Colda for example. If you want to look "fab" you would be better served letting them keep the cocktail and stick the paper umberella from it in your hair for extra color. Or better still stick it in your eye ball so you do not have to watch other people waving spray can whipped cream pina coladas around trying to look fab.

Yes - I take my cocktails seriously :-)

Don't worry, a cocktail is the last thing I'd drink there

Now I'm craving for a White Russian, or a Tom Collins....

The high prices are probably to pay for the exotic dancers and the upkeep of the leather seat booths and the oh-so-classy decor, methinks:P

I find the exotic dancers are the equivalent of having snooker or golf on in a pub. I'm not interested in it, in fact I find it really boring, but strangely enough my attention is continually propelled towards it. :)

they can charge €50 a pint if they want. Should they not be allowed make as profit as they can?

They offer a "premium" service for a select community, so thus they lose business from mainstream consumers, so want you to compensate them for that. Plus I guess you pay a little extra for having somewhere gay.

Secondly, Capital bars have been in financial trouble for quite some time now. Lucky that Dragon is still open at all.

That perception has always been around but in reality a lot of gay and lesbian folk live well below average because of discrimination, often having educational problems due to family and bullying, and lack of confidence. Plus add to that lots of people don't buy homes as couples because its horribly legally complicated so this means people pay more for housing.

This is OT really GCN hasn't been reflective of the LGBT community for some years due to bad editorial policies and just plain poor writing. Its a shame because in my teens and twenties it was a very important resource.

Seemingly dragon is no longer part of the capital group and was sold by the examiner as a going concern in 2009 mind you that is some what of a technicality as it was sold to the o'dwyer brothers who own Capital bars! Don't think it's in the same financial trouble anymore but as was said they can charge what ever they want if people are willing to pay it, which they are and I would not regard dragon as an out and out gay bar anyway as the crowd is very mixed or at least was the last time I was there on a saturday night.

Laser gives to the bank who might want to keep it while cash can be deposited somewhere else?

yeah maybe so. most pubs and clubs accept laser. i find it very strange the dragon would not accept it being a city centre gay club.
i always bring cash with me but the laser is good in case an emergency crops up.
    the bastids! :D
i probably paid the wages of the 50 small pakistani boys that they keep down in the cellar that night
