HET investigations; Why are the Brits going after the Loyalists?

69 out of the 71 HET investigations have been aimed at Loyalists, the other two were aimed at a "dissident" Republican and the other an ex-Provisional turned neo-fascist. What is going on? Why do people think that the Brits are going after the Loyalists?

Of the 71 HET investigations 65 are part of Operation Ballast, which examined the activities of the UVF in north Belfast. Operation Ballast was set up after a damning report by former Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan, who claimed the paramilitary killers were protected from prosecution because they were police agents.

Bloody stupid way of going about things. If there was collusion involved they'll get nowhere and just waste millions investigating. Only for anyone convicted to be released after 2 years.

They should completely wipe the slate for pre-1998 troubles linked convictions - none of this full court case and sentencing bollocks before you apply to get out on a licence -then we'd have a much better chance at getting the truth.

Perhaps this is really being done so the policing board can counter claims they are only targeting republican areas.

Agreed, well up to a point.

Do you think this has anything to do with them trying to get rid of PUP?

PUP - a tiny political entity is fading away anyway, nothing to do with getting rid of them. When it's leader Dawn Purvis resigned as both as leader and a member because of its relationship with the UVF and the murder of Bobby Moffet - it says it all about it's future.

I doubt it - I would have thought if anything this could be used by PUP to increase their standing. They have this issue highlighted on their assembly campaign. What makes you think it is to do with them?

What does it matter? PUP is very small.

Yeah true, I was just throwing it out there.

Is this a sop to the Provies than from the Brits? I mean they might need their attack dogs down the line again. They must be going after them for a reason.

    After loyalists you mean?

I have made the point before. We need to decide what is going to happen. We either go back and investigate every killing in the Troubles or we draw the line in the sand and just end it. All pre 1998 deaths don't get investigated.

As much as i would love for justice to be done to Adams and Mcguiness and the killers, we either give justice to both sides or we draw the line in the sand and move on.

Uh most of those killed by the IRA were RUC, UDR and BA "very nice chaps" ;)....They werent just any old prod like your mates killed so there is a big difference.

Anyway....Thanks for your opinion....Now WHY do you think the Brits are doing this?

Agree mostly. How would you feel if they did investigations but there would be automatic exemption from prison? no going away for 2years when convicted.

Whats the point of giving them 2 years in prison?

That's what they're doing at the moment. I'd like to get rid of that. I'm not sure why its in place to be honest.

Didnt you claim that McGeough being jailed was correct?

Yes. But thats my point of view. He should be jailed for longer. I said the law needs to be more clear. Either do it for every one or not at all.

I think she means Gerry McGeough. Whilst I think describing him as a facist is harsh he is openly anti-gay and did promote Justin Barrett when he was trying to become an MEP
