Question re Tax

    Just 2 quick questions lads,

    1) My car tax expired the end of April and I probly won't get into the tax office to renew it until this coming Friday as I have the day off work. Do the guards give drivers a few days grace at the start of the month to get the tax paid? Surely they don't expect everyone to be in the office doing it bang on May 1st!!

    2) I drive a car-van so to tax it I need to have my DOE cert with me, however my DOE expires in 2 weeks. Will they tax the car for the year with so little time left on the DOE or will they make me renew the DOE for the coming year before I tax the car??

    Thanks!!

On your first question you've answered it yourself - there is the possibility/high likelihood of a few days grace where road tax is concerned, but you're in the hands of the individual garda who might be dealing with you. Summonsing for tax, where that is the only thing wrong with the car, where the tax is a matter of days out would be pretty exceptional.

In any event a summons for not having taxed where arrears are paid in full in the meantime and the arrears constituted a few days only will certainly be struck out.

I don't know the answer to your second question but my gut instinct says yes.

Can you not use www.motortax.ie to tax it rather than wait to get to the office in any event ?

Thanks for the reply. This is the first time I will be taxing the car and afaik you have to go to the tax office on the first time! In future they should send me a renewal letter and PIN to do it online!

True. In this case no arrears would be due if the OP pays his tax before the end of May. That's not to be considered a grace period though, it's still illegal to drive without tax, it just means you won't be liable for arrears if you tax during May. Arrears are charged at the full monthly rate + 12%.

Not without a PIN which he won't get until the change of ownership is processed I guess.
Can't use the digits from the chassis number as that's only for first registrations (imports, new cars)

Did you buy the car secondhand in Ireland?
If yes, and if it's already transfered to your name, you should have got a letter with renewal pin anyway.

    1. No one is expecting you to be doing it bang on May the 1st, but you could have easily done it earlier, before your tax expired.

    2. If your certificate of worthiness is valid on a day you are taxing a car, they are obliged to tax it, even if cert was to expire next day.

You should be fine driving with the tax expired, since as its only out a few days, however it is technically wrong, but i personally wouldn't worry.

You need a valid DOE test to tax a commercial, even if there is only a weeks test left its still fine, as long as its valid on the day you tax it.

Dont think you can ever tax a commercial online (I can't anyway) seens as you need to provide the DOE test certificate.

If it is your first time taxing a commercial (and depending on the county you are taxing it in ) you may need to fill out the RF 111a form, which is a decleration that must be stamped by a guard.

No grace at all. Once tax has expired you are no longer road legal. You do have till the end of the month to pay the tax without incurring arrears (perhaps that's what the clerk meant) but legally you're not allowed to have the car on the road at any time during that period. A garda would use his discretion and let you off with a gentle warning so long as you're not taking the p1$$.

    It's not grace period.
AFAIK if tax is expired by more than 2 months, gardai are allowed to take the car off you.
But it absolutely doesn't mean it's legal to drive with tax expired even by few days.

I use the car for private use only so I'm not even going to try and get commercial tax on it. It is insured as a private vehicle and if I had a crash and the insurance company saw it was taxed as commercial but insured private the cúnts might use that as a way to get out of settling any claims. That would be my big worry anyway and when I'm paying 2k a year insurance it would be stupid to invalidate it for the sake of saving €300 tax!!

i have a similar kind of question. I have just changed my car about a month ago from a car dealer and its a used car. I signed the forms and whatever at the dealer and have received the log book from shannon. Only thing now is that i need to tax it have the RF100A form. The certificate of roadworthiness is the number i need. Is that number on the NCT disc (i know there's two numbers on the disc) does anyone know or is it another number which is on the sheet they give you when the car passes the NCT test.

    thanks in advance

Did you read the information overleaf rf100a form?
Cert of roadworthiness number does not apply to passenger cars.
