"Round-the-world" routes to Australia -- good idea?

We're planning a longish family trip to Australia in Spring 2012, probably staying three months or so.

Our two children will be aged 4.5 and 2.5 then, and I would like to break up the trip there and back in the hope of minimising the agony of long-haul flights.

Some people have suggested travelling all the way with minimum delay, eg just stopping over in Singapore airport for a few hours, the rationale being that stopovers only prolong the agony.

I don't know the best way to do it, but I am tempted to opt for a round-the-world ticket and break up the journey there and back into smaller chunks, spending a day or two in different locations.

Would that make any sense? If so, what would the best stopovers be? We happen to have family currently in Kuwait, so I've thought of something like Dubai-Singapore-Melbourne, with maybe one or two other locations in between. No idea at all of what might work on the way back.

All suggestions, success stories and horror stories welcome. Thanks in advance.

I would definitely go with breaking up the journey. Those kids are too young to enjoy the in flight entertainment, possibly. I think they would enjoy the break.

You wouldn't need a RTW ticket, simply fly into an asian hub like Singapore, KL or Bangkok for a few days stopover.

If you fancy an adventurous add on, you could then avail of flights with budget airlines such as the excellent AirAsia.com to Bali, Langkawi, Borneo or elsewhere on their fairly extensive network.

If humidity isn't too appealing, another suggestion would be to fly into KL then make your way up to the cooler climate of the Cameron Highlands hill station and stay in a lodge hotel.
