im a single parent living at home with my parents, i was working part time up until a couple of months ago and recieve lone parents allowance.

i was transferred a small house afew months ago but the house needs to be completely renovated eg. no bathroom, heating, kitchen, floors, doors etc. it is an empty shell and i have a 8000 loan to renovate but still will need another 5,000 at least. im stuck paying esb and home insurance for a house i cant use

there is no work in my area i have tried to get work and done courses but i live in a tiny town with no transport links to larger towns. i lived in cork before i got pregnant before moving home for support and would love to move back to look for work and save money to finish my house.i have a close friend that would child mind for me.

would i be able to apply for rent allowance even though i have a house??

Just to clarify you have a house already? are you receiving an allowance for this or is this rent or mortgage free

yes i have a house but it was recently given to me and needs ALOT of work to become liveable, i dont have a morgage just a loan for 8000 euro which i pay 31 euro a week. it will cost another 5000 euro at the very least maybe up to 10,000 euro as its that bad!
there is no way i can save that kind of money without working and i cant get another loan either

what im asking is if i can get rent allowance to move to an area that i can get work in while i have a house, an unlivable one but a house all the same?

    Hiya,

I would be very surprised if you would be given rent allowance most especially if you have a house already but no harm in asking I suppose they can only say no

if the council has given you a house and you move out regardless of the reasons then you are not entitled to RA for up to two years

in order to claim RA one of the conditions is that you are renting privately and can prove that you have been paying rent for 6 of the last 12 months and that you are on the council housing list

as you have a council house you can not claim RA

best bet is to use the loan money you have to get what the big work done in the house if you have the loan with a credit union once you have paid off a certain amount of the loan you can get a top up of your loan

your house is not going to be done over night it is a work in progress you just have to accept that unfortunately and get on with what has to be done think about it, it may take up to 5years to do but you will have that house forever somewhere to bring your child up in the scheme of life thats nothing suck it up and be grateful you have what you have some people have been an eternity waiting on housing or some like me worked like a lunatic in the boom times but never earned enough for a mortgage and now find themselves unemployed and stuck in nomads land of renting **** holes that are over priced and just recently being able to avail of applying to the council list with a wait of over 10years so happy days ahead
