Hello ive just bought a second hand trek 2.1 alpha was wondering is this normal or is it something i need to get fixed.
The back wheel sits into the frame and runs free with know rubbing or buckelling but only when i have the axle set like this.(See image 007)
it runs straight and through but if i set the axle in the forks where no metal is
showing like this (see image 11)
then the wheel rubs and the wheel is way over in the forks to the right (see image 6)
I really hope the frame isn't bent but if it is, can it be fixed or am i just not putting the wheel back in right any help would be very appreciated.
    cheers
    ciaran

Image 5 shows the drive side skewer not quite in. Is that as far as it'll go in, or can you fit it in all the way? If not, it could be that the deraileur hanger is slightly bent, or the frame a little tight set. This happened to my own bike when it was shipped over, had to file out a bit of the frame.

If it won't go in, maybe take it to your LBS if you're not certain. Did you test ride the bike before you bought it, and was it alright when you took it?

Usually the main cause is the axle not being spaced correctley after a service.
But there are a list of other things it could be, including as mentioned, the axle not sitting intothe dropouts completely

sorry forgot to mention that the bike is cycling fine bar the axle not fitting in the dropouts properly the right hand side is as far as i can get wheel into the dropout. The lower gears are taking a while to get into but im going to take it in for a service tomorrow and see what happens. i really hope its something simple but i have a feeling it could be something worse.

If it's not fitting in, then either the hub is damaged, or there's a small bit of damage to the frame/hanger. Either way, it should be nothing serious.

My bike looked like this when it arrived:

Five minutes with a file and a new hanger sorted it out. It should be grand :)

when i bought the bike i had a cycle it was grand the wheels were true and straight to be honest it wasnt something that i noticed i had a good check of the frame to make sure there where no cracks welds or anything but i dont think i paid any attention to the way the axle sat in the frame.
Cheers for the info lads i don't think i have the experience or knowledge to check if the derailleur hanger is bent and i dont have the confidence to take a file to the frame.
Ill post as soon as the LBS tell me what the problem is

sorry i think i might have found out what the problem is can anyone tell me what way round the spring goes the wheel fits in the dropouts perfectly without the spring in the driver/gear side.(see pic 12)
although when the spring is in it doesnt fit. (see pic 17)

can anyone tell me which way round the spring should be
either the fat end away from the cassette/ gears like pic(Pic 14)
or the fat end towards the cassette/ gears like pic(Pic 16)cheers
    cheers ciaran

BTW the wheel sits in perfectly when i swapped the spring round so it was like pic 14
